Who's going to be able to afford the full cost of the tokens when this plays out? I think there's going to be a pretty big bifurcation of capability between the average consumer (and even small business) and the giant corporations who have access to all the tools.

The thing is, there's no end to the appetite to lower quality in order to reduce personal cost. Whether there's a website or not is very "seen". Whether it's any good at evoking intended understandings or organizing information is not (directly) seen. Unfortunately, only a very small portion of humanity directly cares about design.

The equalizer is easily 20 years old, and is restricted to presets. Presets! A parametric EQ is the only thing that can make Apple's own Powerbeats Pro sound good. And for several golden years (despite lots of Apple's work against it) we had a really good jailbreak equalizer that worked with Apple Music. Eventually I just gave up on the whole thing. But I remember going out for trail runs with good sounding music without worrying about losing my earbuds.

Interestingly enough there are papers that suggest that AI feeding on itself will degrade output quality over time. What I've noticed from my peers is that everything produced now looks the same, and they're sick of it.

This is fine until we reduce it all the way to "but I liked being a human"

It does some neat things that, ultimately, are super obnoxious. Background animations and "sparkle" effects that make my terminal indicate activity at all times. Just subtly broken behavior.

I would be interested if a common outcome was to have a fork with AI PRs and one with AI contributions disabled. Not only does it satisfy both camps, but it provides a longterm anecdote of the effects of agentic code quality and maintainability.

Several people I work with have adopted its mannerisms unironically. Then again we don't exactly hang out outside of work.

With LLMs, everyone's a developer now. Welcome to the mainstream.

We could put Sam Altman and gdb on it; after all, they know a ton about AI. Elon Musk probably has some important insights too! They'd probably know best if a new competitor or any of these open source models should be allowed to exist. This should alleviate all sorts of problems (for OpenAI).

Replace this with Tesla, Waymo, etc and it's not far fetched. It might take a while, but liability is going to need a new legal doctrine to describe why it's not their fault that their car & their code killed someone.

Pretty incredible how much humans can be conditioned, isn’t it?

And what has the FAA done to both costs and innovation?

You’re likely taking this too literally. OP is saying that beliefs inspire action, but as of now we haven’t seen action from these people that support such an extreme belief.

What we have seen is incredible hype (justified or not), so it’s more likely just a continuation of that.

It's like inflation for quality of life. Right now we're in the stimulus check phase, and people feel great about having been handed some cash. The next step is that cash has been spent, and what's remaining isn't worth anything.
