Upvoted for thoughtful info, though I would suggest using metric tons (t) rather than teslas (T) to make reading easier for us SI people.

Because the strong privacy protections could be of the form "no image leaves the device" and "only vetted software will touch the image data".

Sometimes, privacy is at odds with features. That is why those devices would no longer be marketable as "regular smart glasses."

We need more stigma against those devices, not less.

But at the same time we need to make medical vision devices that are exempt from those bans because they give strong privacy protections to the passerbys.

Yes. And in addition to things that are broken by accident, I see all those dark patterns put there on purpose.

Or possibly because quizzes and homework are a good way to learn the material, but if students have the AI do it instead they won't learn.

No obsession required.

Your eyes won't be focused on "infinite" in VR either. The focus distance is similar to the distance to the screen on your desk.

To be clear, you don't have to run things on it, you can stream wirelessly from your PC.

An advantage of a standalone unit is you can take it with you, or for people who don't already have a gaming computer.

You're also asking why not have it plug to a more powerful machine. The answer for that is simple: wires get snagged and pulled on, in practice it's a poor experience (remember, you cannot see the wires when you are wearing the headset).
