Don't Stand Out.

When you say "Each user can choose a different notification service" you aren't enhancing privacy you are standing out.

When you say "Each group of users can have their own servers" you aren't enhancing privacy you are standing out.

So yeah, it's only for "total normies" in the sense that if you insist on standing out from those "total normies" that's a problem.

Signal is taking advantage of the inherent camouflage of crowds, once you insist on standing out that's gone and you can't get it back.

I am greatly enjoying the juxtaposition of a comment asserting that obviously BeOS was so far from POSIX that Haiku had to do loads of work to get there and your comment that BeOS was POSIX compliant.

You seem to be taking "copy" much too literally.

"Blue Prince" is heavily inspired by earlier works, those works just aren't video games. You could say the same all the way back to ADVENT, the Colossal Cave Adventure of the 1970s being inspired by adventures in an actual cave.

Of course good games do something we haven't seen before or do it better, but they are also invariably products of a wider culture. A big part of why Animal Well doesn't need to explain itself is that a modern video game player knows how this sort of game works and so when they get Slink or B Wand or similar they realise they can explore places they couldn't reach before.

> The AO3 database contains account information that may include your username, email address, IP address, and a hashed version of your password.

There's not much to be done about storing a username (though if you don't want the connection made it's already obviously smart not to have the same username on AO3 as on say, Facebook) and anonymous mail accounts make sense for fan work every bit as much as a PO Box does - but for passwords we can just do better and it makes sense to me as a worthwhile piece of engineering for AO3

WebAuthn lets a site work with Security Keys and that makes such a loss basically harmless unlike for password hashes.

Outside of the GUI, Be is a very thin veneer over Unix. There is, no joke, a class named "BStatable" which, if you know some Unix, is just stat, because of course what their OS kernel implements is just stat.

In the places where there's something entirely different going on, such as networking in earlier BeOS, it's trash and you'd obviously want to throw it away and do what Unix did - Be were doing so. So a hypothetical turn of the century fruit-flavour BeOS is probably much closer to "Unix with a different UI" than you're thinking. NeXT changed nothing there.

Pre-standard C++ is an even worse programming language than C++ 98, but also the big difference wouldn't have been the technology, it was the people. If Apple buy Be Inc they're getting JLG back whereas if they buy NeXT they get Jobs back.

Jobs is what makes or breaks Apple in that critical period. I didn't like him but that's relevant to the success of the company. JLG did not have whatever it was Jobs gave the company.

I wasn't there for Stardew, but Fortnite definitely does not start out copying PUBG, the transformation is arguably more damning - Fortnite was a different and much less interesting game (now "Save The World" mode), and it got the "Battle Royale" mode everybody knows about today because PUBG popularized this idea of "battle royale" shooters and Epic could see how to do that with their existing IP very quickly and clean up.

Now that I find a more compelling argument than "Hey you used hexes". It might still turn out to be a similar "obvious" choice but unlike the hexes it's not the first idea that comes to mind.

That's fair, the holiday is indeed tomorrow (31 October) but I have people here on the 29th and not on the 31st for scheduling reasons, I should have clarified.

But, seventy hours of play should mean that if you narrow down that the correct answer has exactly two exits, costs nothing and is green, it's not lavatory or bookshop :D

Also remember that cows aren't magic. It's only possible to get milk from a female cow for the same reason you can get milk from a female human. It's a female mammal which is lactating in order to produce food for its young. The cow was impregnated - it has no say in this matter - and the baby cow has been taken away (and in most cases killed) so that we can steal the milk instead. So that's... not great. Given we're apparently still murdering each other in considerable numbers in multiple wars this isn't on my top-10 "Worst things humans are doing right now" list but hey, it's not nothing.

Also, chocolate eggs, coins, rabbits

It being Halloween yesterday I ate sour fizzy dracula fangs, bats and pumpkins.

Yup. Quoting Wikipedia: "The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude except as a punishment for a crime where the individual has been convicted"

Mandatory "Penal labour" isn't chattel slavery but it would still be recognised as slavery in any modern understanding.

Doesn't seem to have https://blueprintle.org/ (which won't make any sense if you haven't played Blue Prince, but unlike Blue Prince itself it is free)

I don't see it, but maybe you have examples where there are specific choices which were copied?
