As a prior I don't think it's at the level of "when you see a hack you should assume it's north korea"

Again it's just in comparison to:

- The death of hundreds of thousands(?) in the ukraine/russia conflict

- Tens of thousands in palestine

- Tens of thousands in iran

They all seem more acute/no excuses are being made.

Agree crimes against your own people should probably be the more major consideration. In terms of who is the biggest baddie there are also elements of actively bombing/starving vs the more passive methods of NK control.

TBH I think I (and maybe others) just get triggered when the bogey man is invoked each time there's a crypto story.

Whatever NK does seems relatively tame in today's world. On the global stage it's generally thought of as a larger crime to oppress the peoples of other's countries (either the ukraine or iran conflict should fit your priors).

Is that what happens here? Tether just pocket the difference?

There's still relative rates of return i.e. 100% of money isn't in gov bonds even though it should outperform inflation

Why not accept the write downs and say you're pivoting to AI? The can can't be kicked down the road forever...

It's interesting to note the anthropic marginal cost of compute is quite high (the SpaceX deal). Claude estimates SpaceX are charging 3x as much as the anthropic average! If that is correct then a few interesting things are going on:

1. Anthropic are probably losing money on the SpaceX deal or not making much at all.

2. To be willing to pay a spot rate so high anthropic likely have no better options.

3. Many of the existing cheaper vendors are likely doing "we will give you cheap compute for now if you give us big commitments"... (cf. hyperscaler capex spends)

Which I suppose is to say that if the spot prices are in the same ballpark as future costs then anthro stops looking profitable pretty quickly. If you're especially bearish you can also throw in the huge reduction in token prices recently and that SpaceX is charging google almost 2x as much as they charge anthropic!

Happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable.

You might be able to make transactions work but it's really the opposite of what duckdb is designed for. Do it only for fun.

I think they need another version of the charts with "subscription prices" at least. Lots of people are not paying API rates.

Yeah he recently built a rack over a weekend and has been planning to fill it.

He has decent business takes on tech, the podcast/articles are worth paying attention to. The actual tech takes are probably too dumb for the hn audience, but you aren't the target audience.

Forgive me for being the idiot in the room but is the argument:

1. 5900 was always known to be an extra unsafe port to have open

2. all ports should be assumed unsafe without explicit vetting

I'm assuming the argument being made is (2), but it really is a sad safe of affairs because use cases from time to time do involve having ports hot.

Or should things be taken one step further to *always* use a vpn or similar?

The sales pitch should change from "probabilistically we will NEVER lose your data" to "you are most likely to lose your data due to wars, terrorists, software bugs, someone losing the master encryption key, the government forcing us to...".

Offsite backups are sadly rare these days, and aws sales is the main reason why.
