Um, all of the companies mentioned in this comment thread (with the exception of the original company mentioned, NeXT) received VC investment.

MBAs don't roll into startups to help get them off the ground. One of the good things about what YC has done to startup culture is remove the notion that engineers can't just run the company and do sales.

This is basically the same as hiring a new person and giving them normal network access to get their job done. Did they upload a file to Beijing? Who knows?

You know, I searched this article for "China" and "India" (each of whom have over 60 Gigawatts of coal-fired power plants completing construction over the next 24 months) and found nothing.

The world needs to either decide that we will confront the developing world and tell them they cannot build power plants like we did (unlikely), or start figuring out how to ameliorate the effects of the warming.

It is fundamentally unserious for smaller-population rich countries to think they can cut their own emissions enough to make a dent, unless they plan to return their populations to the pre-electric age.

This is a Swiss company offering services to French users. Although Switzerland is not an EU member, it is a party to the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) and through this, the Swiss government would likely be required to help enforce French rulings against their companies.

I think the flaw of this is that it goes beyond the traditional Trolley Problem and adds in a self-preservation angle that isn't normally present. It would be like telling the human making the choice that the 1 person on the side track is their child.

There's an argument to be made that progress on desktop personal computers has been faster because hackers (in the good sense) can hack around and invent new stuff in ways you really cannot on mobile/tablet locked-down hardware and software.

The commenter may have sounded unhinged but the thesis is sound.

The average age for first phone in the US at least is now around 8.5yrs. The kids who are capable of independently deciding to call a friend or grandma already likely have a phone.

This device screams "we came up with use cases in a conference room committee meeting" not "we're solving one problem everyone has in a new way".

Maybe I've had too much coffee and I'm impatient, but this kind of article bugs me. It has a tremendous amount of valuable detail but you don't learn why Passkeys are a trap until you've read like 2/3rds of it, and it's impenetrable to anyone who isn't a CS professional of some sort.

Add a TL;DR at the top perhaps.

You must be joking. Democratic Socialism is just Socialism with a prettier name. Socialism does not work, full stop, unless you're in the group at the top controlling the strings. Don't point at the nordic countries, they have far less progressive taxation policies that the US when you factor VAT in.

I like writing code too. What I don't like doing is debugging code that just isn't doing what I want. Debugging CSS layout issues in Safari vs Chrome vs Firefox? Screw that...agent do it. Debugging layout issues in a React Native mobile app on Android on that one weird screen layout phone? Screw that....agent do it.

Not unless you're here illegally. And it has nothing to do with skin color. Just the basic fact that a country not in control of its borders ceases to be a country.

Easy to say this when the original commenter incorrectly described Tobias' comments. He suggested that those who pay more in taxes should have a greater say in how the government is spending the money. This is not a crazy idea on its face; you could say that taken to the limit it would not be a good system to live in (the highest taxpayer dictating what gov't does).

But it does make sense that those who are footing the bill for everything might be consulted a little on the plans to spend.
