> all the same knowledge is still out there though

> The markup is the millions in training they committed and the connecting the knowledge

Sure, but gated behind a hallucinating idiot.

You didn't specify which one.

Also...

> But boy was I disappointed that their "Zwilling Peak" branded ceramic hybrid frying pan for $100 says "Made in China"

But does it work? My twenty year old B&W speakers were built in China but they do the job and do it really well.

>but the quiz is unfair - it assumes there is only one "true way", but a lot of frameworks give you options

It says right underneath that quiz:

"There isn’t really a right answer, because you were probably right for some language"

This was my experience. Years ago I travelled to New Zealand in what would be their spring time. We stayed in Wanaka but also travelled around Twizel, Tekapo etc.

Although it was pretty sunny with clear blue skies, the air temperature was fairly chilly (shirt, jumper and fleece cold - and I'm Scottish so used to cold weather) and I started to burn. I was warned about this, and the probability of high UV exposure at altitude by the locals and family, and was advised to apply a high factor sunblock whilst roaming around the higher elevations of New Zealand's South Island, which I did.

> I don't get the "everything needs to support dark theme" thing either tbh

I started my career when screens were black with text displayed using green/white/amber phosphor and was used to that. I never liked the bright white UIs when GUI based OS/front ends took over (before themes became a thing).

I find the wall of bright white with black/dark text tiring to look at. Collaborating with colleagues doing screen sharing where they don't use dark themes is really jarring.

It's almost an accessibility thing for me these days.

I don't mind taking a long time to complete a book if the story is good. I just re-read a couple of Peter F Hamilton 1200 page tomes that took me over a month to complete (Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained). However they were fun and I was immersed in the world building.

There are other far shorter novels I have abandoned after 70-80 pages because they're just not very good.

I gave up on the Booker Prize years ago. It's mostly hand wringing, dreary, navel gazing tedium, which is a shame.

I own, and have read, quite a few novels from the SF Masterworks series. It's my go to for decent quality reprints of older sci-fi. Can definitely recommend.

> My home cluster is built from surplus Dell Optiplex desktops

I used to do this as well and this is fine if you're able to source cheap power. But I'm in the UK, electricity prices are insane and I can't afford to run this kind of setup any more.

> Microsoft management has decided CLR has a new meaning, C# Language Runtime. > VB, C++/CLI and F# are only there because existing customers.

Oh, I think we need a citation for these claims.

No, sadly not.

When I was a young broth of a boy I worked as a field engineer looking after a whole bunch of different hardware. One of these was a Pick machine with its own dedicated Pick branded hardware, amongst a fleet of terminals and early PC hardware. Nothing ever seemed to go wrong with it.
