Stelantis turned Jeep into a lifestyle brand. They're milking as much money out of the brand as they can. I don't know how they think this will play out in the long term, but it seems like companies these days aren't thinking about the long term.

LLMs are transitioning programming from a profession to a hobby. We've seen this happen with several professions that have been largely automated. People still enjoy blacksmithing. Luthiers still enjoy hand-crafting guitars. Both are economically impractical, but people enjoy doing it. Some are even able to monetize their hobby, like lots of people on YouTube do.

I think more developers would use SIMD if there were macros handling the details.

First it was Jerry Pournelle and now it's John Dvorak. I read those columns religiously back in the day. I just realized I no longer read anyone religiously, listen to podcasts for any length of time - there's something about the buzz of 80s computing that has been totally lost. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I think it just means the industry has matured. But boy oh boy! The immature industry was a lot of fun!

Did you not notice my use of the word uninformed?

Personally, I would go to Toronto. Decades ago I used to work for a Canadian company headquartered in Toronto and had development offices in the states. There was a project I needed to do with a distinguished engineer that required me to move to Toronto for a few months. I really liked it. TBH, there are very few cities in the US that I would say are on par with Toronto, and none are better. Now the Winters are brutal, but they're brutal where I'm from so that's not a dealbreaker for me.

Emigration out of the US right now is at historic, record-breaking levels. Have any other uninformed comments you'd like to make?

Maybe the CEOs who think AI replaces their employees should be replaced by AI?

Session musicians know full-well what they bring to the table. They also know the trade-off: they're not interested in the continued touring, dealing with fans, having to create new material, etc., etc., etc. They're "no drama" kind of people.

BUT - to make any money as a session musician, certainly enough to make a living, you have to be good. Damn good.
