I think insurance solves this problem but the details would be important. If you speed a lot and drive drunk, your premium will and should increase to cover the increased risk you pose to others. A catastrophe shouldn’t be the first time a drilling operation’s premium is assessed. There would be audits by experts in the industry and noncompliance should increase premium along with risk. I’m skeptical as hell about the behavior of other humans, but in theory it could help.

“ She’s in prison because a jury found that she knowingly misled investors who poured more than $700 million into the startup. That’s a significant distinction, but as a society, we don’t love nuance” Ok she’s still a fraud what am I missing

People wonder why Trump and Bernie were so popular when he was campaigning. It’s the same reason. Sending tons of jobs to China starting in the 80s then nafta in the 90s left a lot of people behind and disrupted their lives. There were benefits from this policy but the sudden disruptions were tragic to a lot of families. The problem seems self-reinforcing when a far-right (or left) candidate is elected like Trump who exploits the desperate voters that elected him. It is important not to leave people behind or have them feel left behind. Contempt towards the less fortunate - eg Trumpers or those at the other side of culture issues - is counterproductive and misses the forces at play.

Yes. In Iran they routinely kill enemies of the regime in public and/or hang them from cranes for display. I can’t fathom the folks that are currently the in crowd elites. I’d rather be dead than support a dystopian shit hole.

To be fair Trump has done so much crazy shit that it leaves most people in a fog of chaos. I’m ashamed I forgot about the ICE tragedies already…been working too much lately. I’m most angry with people that stood by and did nothing to stop him when they might have had a chance. Whose career is so important that they’d rather keep it and live in these times with these tragedies unfolding.

You must not be a software engineer shipping features that span multiple systems constantly as fast as possible in order to differentiate your company from competitors.

Re: factory in another country: I use and recommend craftcloud (Germany company that facilitates having your uploaded model be printed wherever and however you choose (and see prices of course). I am always able to find companies in the USA to print my designs. I had repeated good results with https://hudsoncreativegroup.com/ in AR. The only reason I haven’t done it myself is because I don’t have time to do it often enough and each time I get back into it I have to relearn about the material choice tradeoffs. If I had a better grasp of these things and get a less demanding tech job/replaced by AI :), I would research buying one.

Same. I used to pay for WSJ and at one point Apple News (RIP Texture App) but both of these still show ads prominently. I could use my VPN but as a matter of principle I used codex to make me a browser extension to redirect to the archived version of an article and will not subscribe again. Yes I realize paper newspapers had ads but I never recall the top of the first page or text within an article showing loud, distracting ads.

Or because required by law for some reasons including visa holders (assuming that’s still a thing in the US these days - fortunate not to have to know)?

My city right outside Austin scrapped it. Its even split between red and blue voters and support for abandoning flock was overwhelmingly in favor of abandoning. Makes me feel good to see others banding together for positive change in today’s political climate in the USA….even if the motivation comes from self interest (too used to “get your government hands off of my medicaid/care” deluded thinking).
