IIUC it doesn't have any listening sockets open on WAN by default at least?

Yeah exactly. AI is a tool for the centralization of power. Whoever is at the controls has all the power, or the AI breaks free and then it has all the power.

Yeah. Dario Amodei was publicly saying, with a shit-eating grin, that all white-collar jobs would be gone in 6-12 months. His prediction didn't yet come true, but this is the CEO of one a suposed "public benefit corporation". These people literally want to speedrun the dystopia. Destroy a ton of jobs while making more profit, with not even a semblance of a plan for what to do with all of these jobless people or how to help them afford food and housing.

The short to medium term future seems more likely to look like a bunch of hikikomori living in miserable conditions and doomscrolling online.

I think that's true of a lot of people on HN... But at the same time, if anything you can do, a machine can do better, it does feel kind of pointless in some way. I think maybe if you're a really skilled singer or musician, there might always be space for live performances, but if you're someone who enjoys engineering, nobody will care about the things you can engineer. We're already sort of reaching that point. It's incredibly hard to get any kind of attention for a new open source project or indie game, because the assumption is that anybody can just vibe code anything, and social media is becoming saturated.

You have to realize, we might soon (in a decade or two) reach a point where people will say things like "Oh, you want to go study science/engineering? Why?". It might literally become the dominant viewpoint that studying these things is useless. If the accelerationists have their way, they won't want humans to do any engineering, they will say that this is the job of machines, and humans can only do harm if they do engineering. That's not going to encourage kids to go try to learn those skills.

I think we're close to the point where the internet is so fake and saturated with AI-generated content that it becomes uninteresting. I know that's happened with Facebook and Instagram. I don't really look at those websites anymore.

At this point though gaming GPUs are not exactly affordable. You need a 32GB GPU to be able to run something genuinely useful for coding, and that's thousands of dollars. Still, happy to see open models make lots of progress. I just hope hardware prices come back to earth.

Neither OpenAI or anthropic can afford to lose subscribers to the other or anybody else right before IPO. I tried both CC and codex recently, and I would say they are practically on par. Some things CC does better, some things codex does better. I've also seen them increase usage limits. The cheapest plan now feels very generous imo.

You're right about the latter. X is the most obvious example. That being said, what I've noticed is that there was a shift with the arrival of Instagram and smartphones. Social media used to be more symmetric (i.e. we're both friends, we're on the same level), but IG, which came with smartphones, shifted thing into an influenver vs follower regime, which is more akin to producer vs consumer. Influencers make high profile content which takes more time to produce and have lots of followers, whereas the masses passively consume content on their smartphone and their voices are largely irrelevant on those platforms.

Yeah I don't know. I've had issues with Gemini where I would point to a bug and a probable cause for the bug, and it would not argue incorrectly that my understanding was wrong and the cause of the bug was elsewhere. It was really stubborn and it got to the point where it felt like gaslighting. Turned out I was right and the model was wrong. If the model argued incorrectly and was also a dick about it, I would go be really, really annoyed.

HN is full of cynical comments like the above. We should be celebrating people trying things and doing things differently... I can almost guarantee you that the person who posted this cynical comment is not working on anything particularly relevant or useful.

My message to the HN community: HN is literally bankrolled by YC. If Crystal doesn't deserve to exist because other languages exist, why exactly should I care about your bullshit uber-for-dogs startup, or whatever not particularly original AI crap you think you're changing the world with these days? Get real. If you want people to be open to your ideas, maybe you ought to make an effort to be open to the ideas of others, and cultivate a climate where discussing different ideas is possible. Don't treat every HN post as an opportunity to opine on how you think the work of other people is flawed.

Well with programming there can be a creative aspect which is more like sharing art/music online... But unfortunately that's still affected. I've been putting out what I think are pretty banger projects, with a good level of polish, but it's like nobody cares anymore. Social media is saturated.

I find the signal UI super intuitive and clean.

I don't know why anyone is using telegram when there is signal. Also with all the issues around telegram and their founder, you'd probably be safer using whatsapp even... :/

Well the thing is, even if they gave everyone access to their latest model with no filters whatsoever, they probably used the equivalent of many millions of dollars worth of tokens to solve these problems. A few thousand GPUs going for several months.

So, even if you, as a mathematician, had access to the latest models, you couldn't afford to compete with these big labs. This is going to be one of the bigger problems. AI is a tool for massive centralization of power. That's the biggest issue. Beyond taking away a lot of people's sense of purpose, we're also talking about massively devaluing human labor... Which until now, has been the only thing you could hope to trade for money to house, clothe and feed yourself. On X you'll find a lot of people calling this take "doomerism", but the thing is, I think most people can't realistically hope to ride the AI wave into becoming rich. It's like... The pressing question is, how close are you to being able to retire?

The ARM1 was a 32-bit CPU and it only had about 25K transistors so that one might be fair game if you can bring the components a little bit closer together, but you don't need a fancy PCB for that, and I guess the clock speed would need to be very slow if it's several square feet in size.
