I would absolutely love and daily drive “modern Linux with Win95 UI”.

Skins and theming only gets it so far, I want it to actually be the Win95 front end with Linux underpinnings.

You can’t even block YouTube on your kids devices because Screen Time doesn’t see that YT is installed.

A known bug for years now.

Then good luck getting the time limits to work. It’ll tell the kids “5 minutes left!” then just let them keep going.

Yeah I’m a huge fan too and pay for a subscription. It has basically fully replaced Photoshop for me for at least a few years now. Between Inkscape and Photopea I haven’t touched an Adobe graphics app in years.

Yeah I’ve been locked out for something like a year due to a config issue on the server side and haven’t been able to get a fix via email or irc so just gave up.

There’s lots of good retro-style communities around these days so I’ve moved on.

That’s all forums in a nut shell. Any time you read about something you’re not personally familiar with it’s “look at all these people who know what they’re talking about… “, as soon as it’s something you are personally familiar with it’s “wtf are these people on about?!”

That’s how all “estimated damages” work. It’s all just made up by some random person who guesstimated a number then multiplied it by the maximum possible people effected, realistic or not.

> Another turned his computer that “wouldn’t behave” into IT, full of porn.

Every tech support worker has seen this countless times. So many people are completely blind to the idea that turning your device over to support means support can actually see what’s on your device…

I built my own personal system for this as part of a custom “meal planning” app on my family intranet. Send a link of a random recipe to it (or a photo from your phone) and it strips out the ingredients and instructions and adds it to our own recipe system.

I love the idea of recipe sites and meal planning sites but like most of the web it’s all so user-hostile now that I don’t feel bad scraping stuff anymore. Short of a few exceptions which I do bookmark and visit, they’re all just taking recipes from other sites anyway and adding paragraphs of blogspam and/or AI slop to it.

Sony got my domain registrar to transfer my domain to them without a single email or notice to me whatsoever. I had been using it since the late 90s or early 2000s when you still had to apply and renew via paper forms, and they said (according to the reply from my registrar when I asked why it had been transferred) that I was squatting it... for a service they didn't release until the 2010s.

Sony have always been Disney-esque in their legal aggression. They don't care if they're right, they have teams of lawyers and they're quite happy to sic them on any tiny thing because they know you can't fight back even if you wanted to.

AI-written blogspam where the whole thing is an ad.

They do ship directly to AU: https://www.xteink.com/

I way prefer ePaper over reading on my phone so I have both the x3 and the x4 and love both.

The x3 is so small it sticks to my phone via the charging magnet on the back so it goes everywhere my phone does.

The x4 is a bit bigger so a bit more readable but still smaller than an iPhone, so it’s easy to keep in your pocket or bag.

I’ve owned a lot of Gopro cameras, having done video capture for a variety of motorsports, and they just got too expensive for what you get.

You can be more expensive if you’re better, or you can be worse if you’re cheaper, but they’re both the downsides while living purely off brand recognition.

They also blew up in a time where there wasn’t any real competition. Sony had action cameras but they were bulkier and expensive, and didn’t have the features of GoPro.

These days other brands give better quality video in better quality hardware and more functionality, for cheaper.

Stop using Telstra then. There’s an abundance of NBN resellers who sell better packages for cheaper than Telstra. At this point Telstra is just for old people who don’t want to change the services they’ve always been with.
