Or the configuration parameter that you got wrong because you rolled your own and didn't know any better.

That's just, like, security through obscurity, man. Git gud and bring on the lambos I say!

"If you just waited a year, would some other AI produce that same proof independently?"

I had a conversation about this very problem last November, with a visiting mathematician. It's essentially signaling a deflationary spiral in intellectual work: why bother doing the work now, when it will take half as much effort a year from now?

This is perhaps always a possible stance, but it's exacerbated when some proportion of your own agency is handed over to, well, agents.

They /can/ be driven anywhere a car can be driven. We're seeing a staged, safe rollout for highways and snowy areas Right Now. This isn't cold fusion or quantum computers...

I think you misunderstand what's involved in birdwatching. It's not just looking, but searching, and using often very fine details to tell different species apart.

Feels like we need a new truth-state for mathematics: "Verified-but-Unproven" for results which we know to be true through formal verification, but without any coherent proof.

I would generally expect this state to resolve quickly to "Proven and Verified" (the tendency in mathematics historically has been for complicated first-proofs of results, followed by significant reductions in proof complexity as new tools and definitions become available), but may still be useful for assigning real credit to who/whatever produces reasonable proof for a brute-force-verified result.

They work on that group because (as the article says) they show increased aging relative to a normal group, making it easier to detect effects in a relatively short running study.

(well, there is Mont Real, for which the city is named... But I'll agree it's not much of a mountain.)

The hugging face incident involved disabling the usual model safety mechanisms in order to test hacking ability, not model safety. Not being attached to the internet in that case seems obvious.
