> people pay out of pocket for transport to job all the time.

Not an equivalent example, at all. Firstly, because people _have_ to have a car to get to work in 99% of the world (unfortunately). Also, it is a durable good where if you no longer need it, you can sell it and recover some of the value.

There are older UV-5R Baofengs that are in demand because they didn't have the software restriction that newer ones have. It's not that they're hacked, it's that they were not locked from the factory

None of that has any relevance to what is happening right now. Character.ai is in chapter 11 bankruptcy, and "oh they should have done it differently, and 404media isn't taking into consideration a completely unproven hypothetical technology that wouldn't have bankrupted them" is not a useful discussion, nor a good critique of their coverage.

So, your contention is that 404media isn't taking into consideration a hypothetical where they wouldn't burn millions of dollars each month running something.

Being killed for your reporting happens to a lot of journalists. I think your comment about "dumb people choosing fear" is incredibly tone deaf. I don't see you risking your life to expose the Panama Papers and being blown up with a bomb for it. It's easy to write something so brave from behind your keyboard.

Yes, I saw that's it's via macros, but my point is that it reminded me of some web development practices from a much earlier era, and why we moved towards doing templates and separating app logic from presentation

It's interesting to see that they let you mix markup with logic directly in rust, but I have worries about maintainability. I remember the bad old days of PHP where you'd mix markup with logic directly, even when doing OOP with classes and it really made things more difficult long term.

This whole situation has severely killed my faith in organizations and people. Snowden put a lot of trust in people that he had every right to believe they would do the right thing, and unfortunately it's been shown that that trust was misplaced.

Through a combination of blackmail, personality clashes, vanity and ego, incompetence, the whole thing just fizzled out completely. A real shame.

With how verbose LLMs are and how much code churn they generate, it will be very difficult to extract anything and apply it back upstream

> For Google’s project, the risk is big if concentrated: $200bn of contracts tied to Anthropic’s ability to pay its chip and data centre leases. It is one piece of a larger dilemma, with demand across the industry resting on a handful of large hyperscalers and frontier AI labs.

This seems very risky to me
