I am also tearing up at work while reading this thread.

Think about this some more. It would be horrendous for individual privacy if your neighbors could see what you paid in taxes, all your medicare claims, which of your family members are imprisoned, your kids public school grades. Many things the government does should not be public record.

You are a little out of date. I long for books for my school aged children. The study guide for a test is now a list of Google Slides presentations and Youtube videos. Edison was on target he just misjudged the timeline and the specific technologies. I'm holding out small hope that the loss of books will be considered a failed experiment someday and they will make a comeback. The current approach has some advantages but I consider it strictly worse than my school experience.

Simple, they want Recursive Self Improvement and worry that git will be the bottleneck. So they are making source control as efficient as possible in preparation for that day.

From the first paragraph: "Claude is able to autonomously iterate on research loops, micro-optimize complex programs, and build new services from the ground up at a speed and scale we haven’t seen before. The bottleneck, now, is all of the developer infrastructure built for human scale: source control, builds, and CI."

This is the same argument for why businesses shouldn't use email, chat, or paper.

I run into broken documentation links all the time at work. A few more isn't going to break us.

I used Claude & Gemini extensively to troubleshoot Linux since I switched last year, and it's been mostly great. But then it nearly bricked my install last week and I had to get some human help. I was getting black screens during and after boot and tried many suggestions from multiple AI's. After many hours it turns out I just needed to power cycle my monitor. Shout out to Claude for suggesting that (its memory remembered that I have a dock built in to my primary display).

I am still very happy with my switch to Linux. But if I didn't have the AI help I would say linux is still unacceptable platform for those not willing, able, and excited to get their hands very dirty.

Reminds of the ship captains that became so reliant on autopilot, until it caused an accident. IIRC some research found we need to give enough manual tasks to stop the human in the loop from getting too disengaged. I don't know what that looks like for engineering.

Immigration red tape and education verification can add even more time on top of all that.

Good luck remembering what you put there when asked 10 years later.

I've tried calling the non-emergency number for my city, and they told me to hang up and call 911.

I received access to AI in May of this year and used smaller models a lot in May, June, and July. Haiku 4.5 is terrible for coding. This month Luna was added and it's incredibly capable. I have to reach for a better model 1/50 times instead of 1/2 or 1/3 with Haiku. Luna is better and cheaper than the Haiku and Sonnet models I've been spending most of my time with.

It's safe to say I didn't come to this conclusion because I was "addicted to chasing frontier models"

At least with a TUI you know 100% it works with the keyboard. This is not something you can safely assume about any GUI, on the web or otherwise. Our accessibility team is kept very busy by this fact.
