Off peak USDC/T transfer fees are very low, which I referred to in my post. Your comment directly implied that the exchanges take a cut on deposit.

Binance, and most other exchanges, don't charge platform deposit fees. USDC/T is not expensive to transfer.

"It's the screens" feels too broad, it's not obvious that loving screen time is inherently bad. I do buy that the way news is now presented, and the insidiousness of social media algorithms is worth tackling.

But there are plenty of places in the world that don't seem quite as negatively affected to me, and even where screens are not the main culprit behind government/corporate manipulation and control.

You're never going to get people to stop using social media, but maybe it ought to be possible to regulate better.

It does, measurably. A massively popular site is going to get hammered with more advanced types of scraping, but they're going to have a team that can more easily mitigate it.

A site that doesn't care about corporate users basically loses nothing.

Even in 2010 at Berkeley I was doing a fair amount of paper coding. Some of the professors gave paper-only tests, and we'd practice a bit since you didn't want a midterm to be the first time you had to do it.

Though I also remember sketching programs on paper as a teenager for my TI-83, since it was annoying to type everything out and then have to make a bunch of edits.

Yes, I think they're pretty much saying they don't want to contribute to projects they don't own.

It's hostile to you personally, but I wouldn't call it "user hostile".

Blocking "scrapping [sic]" is also not security theater, you misunderstand the intent of GP.

They're using "industry" in a very loose sense, they mean certain subsets of software development and B2B software tools.

Every open source release is visible to me, too. Is your point that the government could stop it if they wanted? That's true of every government, but it's not a problem until it actually happens.

Presumably less likely to get destroyed than a suicide drone, or one sent further into enemy controlled areas.

There probably aren't a lot of scenarios where it makes sense sense to pick an injured guy up with a drone, but it seems like a plausible last resort option.

You cannot. See the sibling commenter's link to "Reflections on Trusting Trust".

Know what to ask is about as important as the answer. You can't do that very well without domain knowledge.

I'm not sure how it plays out in 5 or 10 years, but that's how it is now.

You could use one of those browser add-ons to replace "steelman" with "supports" everywhere.

I think you are overestimating how decentralized the web is. Tailscale (could) collect a different kind of data than e.g. Google, and I believe it's far less harmful for the average user. If you are a journalist or persecuted by a government then sure, Tailscale is bad news.

But if you think Tailscale is bad for mobile devices because they might be able to tell that you're near another Tailscale user, that is absurd. If you have a need to be physically untrackable, the only solution is to leave your tracking device at home.

It's not so true anymore, but when they were cheaper they probably attracted a ton of bad actors (spammers, phishing sites, etc). I assume the KYC requirements were a response to that.
