> and/or to some extent also what makes money

My observation of people who hire personal assistants is that it's exclusively so they have time to make more money. Or, put another way, they have no more free time than I do, despite having the means to hire an assistant. It's just a really sad way to live.

> Apple is too big for that.

I think you're wrong, but even if you're right, why wouldn't you vote with your wallet anyway?

You alone might not hurt Apple much, but it could certainly help whatever upstart competitor you choose to support.

You're probably right. Based on its MAC and some other quirks about it, I'm certain it's just an ESP32 inside. So if I end up not being able to bend the firmware to my will, I'll be able to bend the hardware to my will instead.

Haven't had this problem in the 10 months I've been living in the Bay. Put on your turn signal and go.

And either way, turning left from a lane that isn't a left turn lane is obviously the wrong response to failing to change lanes.

The cultural staying power of The Orange Box should be studied in universities.

That ship sailed. The court unequivocally determined that the resolver is not a neutral party, and their ruling explicitly demands that the resolver not be neutral.

I've had a PiHole running on a NUC for about 2.5 years. I adore it. It should be built into every consumer router.

My wife still plays her freemium games, the ads just don't load. She took out one of those games when we were sitting at the airport once. She was frustrated that her once-pleasant strategy game was suddenly crammed full of ads for boomer slot machine apps, and I had to explain that the app had probably always been that way.

The number of awesome things we're going to get as a result of this is exciting to think about.

My wife bought this fuckass IoT air purifier that's constantly phoning home. I'm gonna figure out what it's telling the mothership.

> I think maybe it is more like having access to services at one wealth level up.

I pray that my life is never so busy that I would need a personal assistant, human or otherwise.

> You can't just hit it out if the park once or twice and make a classic you can earn residuals from, people move on quickly and you don't earn on repeated playthroughs.

Unless you're Valve, in which case you sell companion cube plushies until the end of time.

I've used it quite a bit since moving to the Bay at the start of the year. They take good care of the buses and trains, things are on time or reasonably close to it. I have no complaints.

This approximately lines up with my experiences with them in SV. Most of the time they drive so conservatively as to be a nuisance to surrounding traffic, and then occasionally one turns left from the wrong lane. Or makes an obviously dumb u-turn or something.

San Jose. The 15mph incident was mid-day, broad daylight, hardly any traffic at all. Airport incident was at 3 AM at SJC.

It continues to bewilder me how wildly different some people's experiences with Waymo are than mine.

My very first time getting a Waymo, as soon as it got going it immediately tried to make a left turn out of a right lane. Then it decided to go 15mph down a 3-lane wide road with a 45mph speed limit for several miles. No warning beeps or anything, it just decided to do that for some reason.

I waited a few months before trying it again. This time I took it to the airport. It worked great... until it got to the airport and caused a traffic jam because it couldn't figure out how to complete a lane change in traffic. Embarrassing, for me and the car.

Waymo is bound to capture the imaginations of people who haven't seen these things before. They certainly made me smile the first time I saw one at the beginning of this year. But god help you if you actually use one.
