That's some nonsense right there. Even if they are right next to each other, the bandwidth of this link is going to be impossibly low due to the thermal masses involved, that's after the fact that efficient DC cooling makes this very improbable.

Edited for readability of the quote.

I agree, but AI seems like one of the things that could easily follow the sun/best source of green (and therefore cheap) energy. I (a European, unfortunately born in the UK) wouldn't mind a bit of latency on my Claude Code sessions if I knew it was so that everything was being run from solar in north Africa.

On the front page for the latest footgun incident? IMO, bluesky is doing great, BTW.

I've done the same by scraping the HTML/JS/CSS off our own Wordpress site and sticking it in S3 (behind CloudFront, of course). It was a mild hassle at the time, but would take seconds with today's LLMs. It was a great decision and has been no hassle since, as we didn't really need a CMS, it was just the default for the person who did our design.

I think this may be a sign of the 'AI guilt' that even the strongest LLM supporters must feel, if they know how it all works and the environmental impact it has. I feel it just as a user of the US-based models, so I guess it must be stronger though possibly subconscious feeling for folks who work on making it happen. It would therefore be hard to be motivated by much other than the giant pile of money they give you each month/year.

I agree with you, but I don't think the parent post was arguing for money being the only factor, just a big one.

Would I work 9-5 for no money: No! Would I move from a shitty 9-5 to a less shitty one while taking an affordable pay cut: Yes.

It's just from articles like this and what I read on the DIY solar forums, so it's interesting to see the real numbers, thanks.

As much as I hate the source of the tariff policies, from an uneducated outsider PoV, they do seem to be causing fewer dollars to leave the country in imports.

How does it feel from an insider perspective? Are the increased costs on imported items and dependent services worth it for a bit more local investment?

Nice point! Would it be the same for sound that doesn't escape a room?

Lovely traditional Scottish name there. ;-)

A purely resistive heater, by definition, has no reactive component so there's no reactive power considerer.

The 0.1% mentioned might be the light that the project produces.

Until there's more wide support for Encrypted Client Hello (ECH), the SNI header in the TLS handshake is always sent in plaintext. Between that an unencrypted DNS, most routers can easily spot/log what you're accessing in a browser.

I think that comment is a little unfair, as the one you link to is a much more sophisticated attack. Thanks for the link, though. Great read!

I think the owner wanted 100 Gbps of scan traffic or had set a specific scan-rate target, which determined that bit rate, so the LLM (correctly) predicted it needed all of those to hit the target.
