Started playing with computers in 1977 at age 13 on a PDP-11/10 (16K core and BASIC) with ASR-33s.

Started professional work in 1984 on IBM PCs, been through the IT industry ups and downs and developments since. Now I "architect" and spend most of my time drawing pics "with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one".

Interested in the intersection of IT and law; politics and social change; general geek/nerd interests.

So this is yet another reason why I run unbound locally.

There's really no reason not to.

Do Microsoft, Google and others not have access to all of those items?

That "moat" is being reduced (again, compared to previous Apple history) as other companies catch up. Apple has continually cannibalized their own hardware to keep ahead of others.

Unlike the "pure" AI players, who rely on NVIDIA and others, Apple is relying on its own capabilities, vertically organized, to maintain its lead in consumer space.

They are using the "cloud" to again, vertically integrated, to preserve their "privacy first" consumer marketing, their hardware to maintain their "premium product" lead, and they are usually second to a market after a first-mover advantage has been reduced by ongoing development.

Exactly my thought as I read it.

They make and sell the hardware that will actually make AI something everyone can used without needing to rely on OpenAI/Anthropic et al.

Apple has never had a moat, anyone else could have built this sort of hardware but they haven't.

So they don't care which model wins, because it will always move out to the edge of the network, and they own a large chunk of that edge.

I've got it on the left and auto-hide on my laptop. Otherwise, it just sits there and has the apps I use on it.

Took at least 5 minutes to set it up and add the apps, then I forgot about it until now.

Just went and removed some apps that I used but don't anymore.

Sort of squash and rebase before a merge back to main?

I remember a smartass kid in year 12 that cited his own essay in the same essay and got points for it being cited properly, but points off for not being a primary source.

> American innovation has ascended to the top of the species

What on earth does that mean and how is it relevant? Are you trying to say that there is no more "[P]rogress of Science and useful Arts" left to be made?

Vale.

Thanks for the correction.

Good politicians do. They at least skim it to see where to add emphasis and the points they want to promote.

Really good politicians work with their speechwriters to get across exactly what they want to communicate.

Except that the purpose of patents is not to be "pro-consumer", at least in the US Constitution, it's to "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts".

The purpose is to provide an incentive to creators to reveal their inventions and make them available to the public and other creators, instead of keeping them as trade secrets.
