Many people are/were already paid for gnome dev work, less so for KDE, but there is a bit. RedHat & friends has funded loads of it over the years since it was picked as the defacto enterprise desktop. It hasn't really managed to have a big impact on penetrating the desktop market because they have not tried to push a real non-enterprise desktop linux variant in multiple decades at this point. I don't think giving them a little bit more money will have any noticeable impact on this whatsoever.

Calling work on these newer projects not "real" work is frankly just disrespectful, even if you don't personally use them. And they are not paying for dotfiles, they are paying the core devs of the software...

What both parties have in common is PAC donations telling them what they should suddenly care about this election cycle. Neither major party has a particularly strong belief system other than trying to win.

Why should they worry about the people that are not going to give them money and likely wont ever be convinced to? They don't need to capture literally every person or whole industries to be successful.

And when it doesn't work, we bail them out and socialize the losses because its not actually a pure free market system.

You don't have to whataboutism this, both "sides" can have bad actors it can be deeper than the idiotic team sport dichotomy of US politics. There is a reason leftists/DSA are gaining so much ground. People realize that the dems in power are really just "republican-light" and nothing meaningful is going to change under them.

Are you also in favour of dropping medicaid and other popular programs? The US has popular socialist programs already but everyone just shuts their eyes and closes their ears and pretends that is somehow not a socialist program and is not popular, even among the right. How many services does the govt have to provide before it is deemed too "socialist"?

Chrome does it, so it must be good? Is a extra 200mb going to cause the computer to choke? probably not, but that doesn't mean people cant complain about the fact that a lot of modern software has gone this route and it all does add up.

While sure, the comments can often be hostile to ai, warranted or not, AI stuff is consistently upvoted and makes it to the top ranks all the time. It not doing well can be as simple as posting it at the wrong time of the day.

I have always found sublime to be the best at large files, well over 1gb. Since you mention bbedit, maybe this is some mac specific issue? I really don't know. But at least among people i know, opening large files has effectively become its main USP.

Should be noted that the linked post is almost 15 years old at this point too, so perhaps not the most up to date either.

Developers are by no means the only humans that use and/or edit CSV files.

Back in the day, pre-torrent/p2p, we used to use hacked boxes to distribute our pirated materials over FTP. If you are lucky and find a stable box, it could last 1-2 years, though that was a pretty rare find. Most machines didn't last more than a month at most.

My company actually built one of the first fully digital aerial mapping systems (commercially at least) using the slightly newer and publicly available Kodak DCS's (~94). They were very nice cameras, especially for the time. I cant even imagine doing this kind of work with film, it would be so tedious. The speed to process the data was incredible when going all digital. This made up for the loss in detail compared to film for most jobs, especially since our costs were quite a bit lower.

Also interesting, is if i recall correctly Kodak actually made about 100 colour infrared versions too which was nice... until we couldn't reliably source them out! We ended up having to burn the filter off of the CCD of the standard RGB cameras systems with some sort of acid solution turning them back into their natural CIR mode.

You can hit scroll lock to lock the mouse to 1 screen. As long as you game on the synergy server machine there is no problems.

FDE Is exactly why my home FS is Solaris 11 (32gb / AES-NI capable xeon). Linux ZFS + their encryption layers combined with large file preallocations performs very poorly.

Its too bad, i really dislike Oracle, but its the best tool for the job currently.

And for the person above, as long as you restrict the pool version to 28 when creating under solaris 11 you can still migrate between solaris/linux/bsd. Obviously you lose out on native FDE though.
