Ah yes, if you like Pakleds, you should really watch Lower Decks! Also if you like TNG, as it's set in the timeline just after TNG and has guest (voice) appearances from many TNG, DS9 and Voyager characters - though not Picard unfortunately (IIRC).

Actually I had the same thought, but this is obviously an article for people who don't know the difference between lossless and lossy compression. Ok, you might argue that it's not a good fit for HN, but going by the many times it seems to have been posted here, some people disagree.

I (in Germany) get "Lake Ontario (Lake America)" too, as well as "Golf von Mexiko (Golf von Amerika)". Maybe so the AfD leaders don't tell on Google to their pal Trump?

Meanwhile, this monstrosity and its two sister ships: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Seas#/media/File... which are only slightly longer than the United States, but around five times as heavy, are according to Wikipedia the largest passenger ships in the world.

When you look at those globs of ink hanging from the print head, you start wondering how anything ever gets printed cleanly...

The German Wikipedia article on Salzburg (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzburg#Namensgebung) has an extensive section on the name. It mentions that salt mining in Hallein only started when Salzburg already had its name, so the name is either connected to Reichenhall or derived from the river Salzach on which it's located. Despite the area being undeniably salty, Salzburg itself didn't have a salt mine or play an important role in the salt trade.

Didn't know that the PHP was lost, thanks for pointing that out.

> This reminds me of the report that AI researchers have taken up smoking as a way to signal their belief that AI will cure cancer before smoking kills them.

While reading the first half of this sentence, I fully expected the second half to be "...to signal their belief that AI will destroy the world before they can get lung cancer"

Well, partly companies behave that way out of anticipatory obedience: if they were to really focus on the long term at the detriment of short-term profits, you'd bet that at least some (maybe influential) shareholders would protest. And partly of course the CEO's compensation depends on the shareholders being happy, not on the long-term viability of the company, so there's that...

Not to contradict anything you wrote, but if you look at the language stats for https://github.com/opencontainers/runc, it has 68.5% Go, 27.1% Shell and 3.5% C, so it's fair to say that it was "written in Go", even though the most important part was C - same as e.g. Doom was written in C, even though it used assembly for optimizing the performance-sensitive parts.
