I was going to say, why System 6 and not 7?

For the commercial flight industry this is very easy to calculate: zero deaths are acceptable. This is not like car manufacturer recall calculations (famously, referenced in Fight Club: if the lawsuit costs the manufacturer less than the recall, they don't recall). The airline industry is built different thanks to heavy regulation.

You could ask: is it _worth_ making it that safe? But we don't ask that. We just make it that safe.

I think there is a good point to be made that this level of safety (it costs what it costs) is probably not worth it for cybersecurity, in general, even if it's largely considered worth it for commercial aviation.

My 2019 iMac is actually great with Linux on it. It had some issues (built-in WiFi not working, sleep resume bugs) but Claude fixed them for me.

They dropped it before the switch from Intel chips; my 2015 iMac could do it (I think) but my 2019 Intel iMac can't.

Don't use the only platforms that have millions of people on them to organize millions of people in the future?

As far as I know at least Anthropic also rents space in Musk's gas generator powered data centers.

I didn't even realize attention was a biological thing! I thought it was more metaphysical.

On the other hand, he gets to go to prison now for sure, which was only slightly likely if he just kept working there as an employee.

Perforce can amortize the cost of Claude, but Anthropic can just use idle Claude-hours for free. They're already renting the datacenter capacity.

In the age of AI writing code, maybe the question flips from "why not license it" to "why not reimplement it"?

It's called "alignment". It's just as impossible for humans as for computers, it turns out.

I think we learned the wrong lesson from Clever Hans, which is that animals don't communicate and it's always the human handler doing it.

The real lesson we should have learned is that horses are stupid and we should have been testing a Border Collie.

Getting closer apparently!

Lots of animals communicate with each other, I think we agree. If we can automatically translate their communicative utterances into English (or any other utterances that we understand), in general, that would be remarkable, and useful! Who cares whether those utterances qualify as "language".
