Video is nicely sequential and eminently suitable for spinning disk service.

What's really confusing me is the 10G lan configuration because it's leaving little headroom above uncompressed 4K 4:4:4 10bit (12bit is broadcast and where source permits archive standard). What about multiple streams for a/b'ing a grade or first/ second camera edit roll?

Ed. added "really" replaced "for" with "above"

Equally it's a sorry indictment of our economic times that the meaning of unlawful has been hammered into a understanding that non prohibition is permission. This aggressive and putative new use is refuted by every founding principle of the common law in Anglo Saxon countries and most of the western world. See the argument of letter vs. spirit for a effect.

Ed. cleared up phrasing around new use, replaced meaning with use for .. meaning.

Sadly I think that the value of Wikipedia in this lamentable example of judicial laziness and professional under funding is the web just happens to be more easily searched than LEXIS. Easily != competently.

Ed. competently replaced usefully

Hang on, doesn't deliberate manipulation of the consumption of counterfactual legal precedent by a sitting judiciary (withholding with measurable effect the countering case references is the study method) only result in a spate of mistrials?

Ed. legal precedent replaced sources for clarity of this significance

I'm guessing that the VC premium pays for privileges like lock up and preferred terms.

VC buying - aka VC selling to greater fool LPs, with purported guarantees trails a wake of retail that fuels their vig.

I know nothing concrete about crypto n.b. but I think I can recognize the structured avarice. If my precis is all that's happening I'd convict this kind of VC instantly.

In the UK movie screening used to be and probably still is decided at the smallest municipal level of town councils, see The Life of Brian.

Don't smoke heroin, try Oxycontin!

Sorry for the snark but I'm nursing a hangover created in the company of a important friend who's promising to quit drinking after moving state next month, so this is a rather timely paper. However if my friend were to merely substitute another intoxicant I'd lose my mind and probably my wonderful friend. So I personally wouldn't suggest alternative habits at least.

Edit: punctuation

>There's no form of marketing that I "like" or actively reward, at most there's marketing that I fell for.

For very high value software licensing agreements there's huge financial rewards for performing the marketing dance with the vendor. Paying list for enterprise software doesn't happen. Customers who even know what Oracle RAS is , or SQL SERVER Parallel, are numbered in the hundreds. The expenditure on manpower to design and commission a new major database installation is two to three orders of magnitude greater than the license costs. That's per database not enterprise wide. You embark upon a courtship from the outset.

This isn't what the article nor what most everyone's discussing, but I thought it worthwhile to offer a real illustration of a very viable means of sales and marketing that can be made to work if you have a high value application or service and can identify a small finite number of customers.

Edit: I probably should have said the number of customers who know what they're doing with the most sophisticated databases is very likely in the hundreds. Arguably the market is rather larger but if the behaviour F500 generally is any indication, there's a lot of nameplate and marquee buying driven by C suite egos. If you're selling a unique and expensive application this is where your margins are. And where tales of sales excess and bad reputation / hubris attaching to your product originate.

In the UK the 1980 banking act introduced formerly excluded commercial banks to housing loans and simultaneously increased the statutory maximum loan value from 3* single wage earners salary to 5* combined household income of married couples. Previously only mutual savings and loan member societies aka building societies could lend private housing loans. Not only now was the public forced into paying for profit margins, but access to capital enjoyed by commercial banks vastly outgunned the much more regulated thrifts who eg couldn't easily raise their offer rates above long term deposit bases. Disastrous in the up rate eighties. Louis Ranieri of Solomon Brothers fame opened The Mortgage Corporation in London and shipped in top trading talent but the thrifts not only knew nothing about their books but weren't persuaded to unload like the accidental priming of the US mortgage market. Although profit seeking it seemed only Ranieri ever gave a damn to do anything that might have saved UK S&Ls. Nothing contributed to the dissolution of the family more than this legislative enforcement of the necessity for one of any separating couple to forgo the ability to afford a home.

P.S. Increasing the lending limit naturally turbocharged inflation. Adjusting your books to manage changing rates environment requires at least functional treasury and cash desks. Into this century several household name UK mutuals turned into banks didn't have their own CHAPS terminal. (Clearing House Automated Payments. Entry level facility for a even a token treasury function. Edit: for that matter even for a small company such as ours.)

Edit: added about the rates market and the abysmal neglect of UK capital economic underpinnings. Things were so desperate and freewheeling the largest UK thrift only was persuaded to return the six billion it's actuaries deemed in excess of pension fund requirements at the time of demutualization in 2018. No carry paid. Edit2: only Ranieri.. have / gave a damn. Ed3 Louis' name correctly.

I don't know when I first heard students boasting about these scare away intro lectures [0] but it was noticeable by the early eighties.

I've a few unsubstantiated hypotheses why:

Zero Sum Game taught by boomer parents conscious that the party was already over but would be sustained inevitably with increasing ruthlessness.[1]

Intellectual Property laws started slicing and dicing knowledge that became temporarily more valuable by fencing it in.

Higher Education caught performance metrics (without much if any performance pay) and so especially elite schools but eventually the rest cottoned onto input pre selection as a way of surviving.

Society became a overt lottery particularly for low income families. This placed the easy weight of the burden of responsibility of tutors on the side of direction to easier subjects.

I believe all these factors and more began compounding exponentially with the enclosures act imposition of a requirement for a degree for work with no or marginal utility for the same.

Marketing, loans and for a particularly insidious enclosures act, the UK's "classless society" introduction of University status not only for a tsunami of new institutions (the UK will now accredit degree granting university status in only two years..) and the white washing of the vocational STEM/ Engineering focused UK Polytechnic system (making them independent degree awarding institutions enabled diversification and dilution) which multiplied the demand for least effort maximum passing grade tertiary education throughout the world ,by the turn of this century to lamentable result.

[0] turning up next week seems to have been the objective of one I spoke with, to demean the honest and intimidated.

[1] The last market play I laid on with my late cofounder was in reaction to the dotbomb. Bought military tech suppliers :-| Point being we need the new program before we are fully grown up so to pass it on. With massive shifts to younger population and the current generation of middle aged folk being capitalized by three bull cycles the last two payable like a Japanese 80's mortgage, by the grandchildren, this means now.

Edit: second footnote placed and "enclosures act" gains a act adjectivally. Edit2 for work para7 Edit3 last para payable not relatable.

Drexel was shut down by order of one certain ambitious NY Assistant AG by the name of Rudy Giuliani. The indictment? Criminal prosecution for statutory civil offences of two counts of failure to file stock transfer forms that by the letter of the law impose a fin e. Sentence: 12 years in federal. Appealed and won. Key witnesses for the prosecution included the convicted fraudster Ivan Boesky. RICO was the act abused to overnight shutter the single most critical liquidity provider to the savings and loans industry. American Thrifts to almost the last were bankrupted instantly. Cost to the taxpayer for the bailout? Cheap at four trillion.

Edited extraneous adjectives and sp

Oh and Lowell Milken, Mike's brother, was charged before anyone else by Giuliani in a overt and well documented hostage manipulation. Lowell never held operational executive office sufficient to have any involvement with the affair and his indictment was dropped. I should probably also note that Mike infamously never spent money on lifestyle and had to be brute forced into upgrading dress and toupee. Anyone on the street as successful as Mike and not spending money will have accumulated substantial wealth even if you don't count the Rodeo drive era. Much of which wealth went into settling civil suits.

Edit2: Giuliani's correct job title at the time

It's Rota's 10th point, on ageing, that's ringing in my ears. I'm the oldest person in the room far too often (and the population growth of recent decades serves to increase the effect and maybe even accelerate its onset) and I can absolutely attest, with the benefit of belated hindsight, to Rota's observation that this transformation happened overnight in a simple erasure of a former life. I'm searching for any indication whether I can see how to formulate any potential insights from my recollection of my time prior to this moment, for the purpose of possible improvements in approach before this life event, but I'm rather lost in thoughts about my experience with the latter half of the ageing phenomenon which has never been so succinctly put.

Rota encourages you in your increasing age to enjoy being regarded as a institutional being. Possibly this needs to be updated in countries where there's been institutional and government scaling creep, because being perceived as institutional and bureaucratic (which effects I could already create too long before qualifying for Rota's advice) in my recent experience creates more difficulty than value with younger folk.

Edit: forgot now inserted that what I have been reflecting on is whether there's better ways leading up to becoming a overnight old aged institution .
