It's like the kid hearing someone yell "fuck" at a ballgame. Just because most people in the culture might agree it's not particularly age-appropriate doesn't mean the kid's ruined.

There's a huge difference between regular exposure via neglectful or abusive parents and "oops I saw a thing". More than a few kids have "walked in" on their parents too, I assure you.

There's a huge difference between "appropriate" vs "harmful".

This is hilarious and harmless. Who cares?

I find it far more offensive that you wouldn't even be able to post this headline without self-censoring in the major social media apps for fear of The Algorithm. How far the internet has fallen.

Better sooner than later. Whatever comes of AI long-term, I don't really see a downside to tempering irrational exuberance sooner rather than later.

The sooner it happens the better, it seems -- at least if a correction is inevitable. Rather than letting the bubble inflate another year or three.

It's definitely an issue but typically not until you pass the ~20 year mark. I recently sold a very low volume car that is now 26 years old and there's definitely a secondary market now in hoarded parts as the originals become less and less available from the manufacturer.

Yeah, and it's being done by a local contractor who presumably knows the process. It'll definitely be interesting if some moustache-twirling CEO at a foreign company is shown to have yelled "BURN THE FOREST DOWN, I WANT IT NOW!" at the contractor, but that feels unlikely in this case.

Pretty sure I'll spend the next year tripping on random things like "how did I change where my screenshots save to, again?" and all kinds of other tiny papercuts. The people I know who change machines more often have complicated scripts to do various things with their dotfiles but I'm not that clever.

The world has changed but 15 years ago we thought it was utterly insane to just pull whatever $latest from $internetsite.probablytrusted.org as part of your build and deployment process.

Man, I wouldn't upgrade my M1 Air to the latest Air for free, it feels as fast as the day I got it, and upgrading's a huge chore.

My work machine went from an M1 with 32GB to an M4 with 24GB and it definitely wasn't worth the time to upgrade.

This makes no sense. What makes the owner of a 6 year old laptop less able to afford a new MacBook than the owner of a 2 or 3 or 4 year old laptop?

If anything, the longer you hold your laptop, the more you amortize the cost, and can more easily afford the next one.

I didn't like the way the example 4 layer motor controller table displayed the data. The bottom row, which says "No customs" under the image then has "5 days sooner" under their box for "The Grid", but then under Shenzen it says "$165 more", then in a tiny font "than the Shenzen shop".

I don't think it was meant to be misleading because the small font style was used throughout, and the bottom row wasn't really designed as part of the table, but it sure looks like it at first glance.

My Mom had a 2008 20" iMac. When it got long in the tooth, we replaced it with an M1 in 2021 or 2022. She was disappointed she wasn't able to get a 20" screen again and had to get one with a huge 24" screen!

Not everyone wants a massive display. Not everyone wants cables everywhere. Not everyone cares about their keyswitches. Not everyone upgrades often enough for a few hundred more bucks to really make a difference.
