I've been saying this on comments for ever - it sucks as a paying customer to have a company that could care less. MS is the worst here. The rest are pretty bad too. Satya just cares about sound bites and stock bumps from layoffs, little intelligent thought from him now unfortunately (he used to be decent, now useless)

Is this count before or after it's closed by someone else as a duplicate of another question that's close but not really the same question?

(I can't tell from PostTypeId = 1)

True, before UV the only way to package python was a container.

I didn't realize they've all such added that, this was a change we made to our own projects last year when these first started - glad to see it's common.

Risk is ensuring enough security researchers are finding these and quarantining these before that default cooldown lapses.

Yes, and a lot of what most people have built sounds a lot like clearcase. Having some way to have both the "working set" of code from a monorepo vs. the "static non-working set" is a useful construct. The magic is making branches of the tree move between them seamlessly.

Clearcase was way ahead of it's time, the main issues there were really just cost (mostly licensing cost, and a little on how many sun servers you needed to serve it and keep state of the vobs)

Perforce was way ahead of it's time, everyone still wants a monotonically increasing changelist identifier too.

My first real job was at Oracle. At the time Oracle started to write their own source control system (and move off of clearcase, which was a very reasonable thing to do).

The guy who ran that project called it his "$LASTNAME law" that every large company will at some point write their own source control system.

I laughed.

About a year later I went to Google, and within a couple of years Google also did the same thing.

Not at all surprised. Git was just good enough (and cheap enough) the companies didn't need to do this to escape the {phsyical scaling, cost scaling} problems that most commercial SCM systems had.

I'm super excited to get rid of all of my workarounds that add or remove `+psycopg` from the URLs depending on what I'm giving it to.

When I worked at one of the early paging and cellular companies, every company had phones and pagers on at least one or two competitors for the oncall folks - you can't get a call to fix your cellular network when you are down.

Likewise while at Google, they didn't let us put Google Voice numbers down as our oncall phone number. Some folks even had multiple phones on different networks as backups.

I'm sure they have either other SOTA models or open source models around to help if things to completely pear shaped.

Unfortunately this is very true. It often takes someone pretty high up on the food chain to see it on HN, X, or get an email/LinkedIn message asking about something for it to become a priority.

I don't see that changing for any of the large companies unfortunately, anytime soon.
