"Trans genocide" is a ridiculous term and insisting on it is doing us no favours (and I say this as a trans woman).

This is great until you want to flick back quickly to reference something earlier in the book where you can't quite remember the wording but you remember the rough context.

> "I don't care what you had it at before, now you are getting a full screen window or something random I made up". Claude tells me this is an intentional design decision on their part...

Yeah, Gnome devs hate their users for some reason and want them to suffer (although some people are into it, I guess). I recommend trying KDE or XFCE instead.

This is what I always tell people. If something is obviously sketchy, don't bother trying to make it safe. Just discard it. No reason to play the attacker's game. (Obviously you need to know what inputs are sketchy vs just uncommon, like people with a single quote in their last name)

I appreciate the New Jersey simplicity as a user (with development skills) too, though. It's usually just a matter of time before I have to dive into the program/library/whatever internals to fix a bug.

I don't so much mind about Paint, but modern Notepad is completely unusable. We had "Notepad but with Rich Text formatting" -- it was called WordPad and no-one used it so they eventually deleted it.

FWIW I bricked a ThinkPad motherboard not that long ago by toggling the wrong BIOS options. Wasn't even a BIOS update (although ironically that would've fixed it), just toggling setting in the F2 Setup Menu. The target configuration was supported, but apparently there was a BIOS bug where if you toggled two different settings without rebooting inbetween, it bricked the motherboard (technically people online found some solutions that involved resoldering chips on the mobo but that's a little outside of my comfort zone). I believe it was Quiet Boot and... some sort of Thunderbolt controller mode? But I don't remember exactly.

That may have been added since I started doing that, but thanks for the heads up :)

I always turn off Android's animations in the developer settings and it makes everything so much more usable. (Animation Scale: 0x, I believe is the setting)

Yeah, even if you look up reviews of a particular model, chances are the manufacturer doesn't make that one anymore (it's over a year old!) and just has some seemingly-identical one with different failure modes.

I'd love to buy quality products (and do when I can!) but it's really hard to get good information as a buyer.

I did this a couple of months back. Ended up refunding the game after spending nearly two hours "playing" the account creation game. If someone doesn't want my money, that's fine by me I guess.

I specifically bought an AMD card for my living room Steam box, and I've had way more driver issues with that computer than when it had an nVidia card (although there's also other software changes). Mostly: the audio hitches frequently when outputting via HDMI, and a many-year-old AMD driver bug where it will always prefer YUV to RGB when supported by the display with no kernel parameters or anything to override (this one is apparently finally getting fixed in 7.2 hopefully). That said, I've had some issues with the nVidia drivers too, and I much prefer open source ones, ceteris paribus.

Yeah but the display server people are different from the WM/DE people. And the former kinda just said "coding is hard" and made it all the responsibility of the WM/DE people.

I had the physical DC barrel jack port fall out the back of a monitor the other day. Granted that's not the connector per se.

I wouldn't call running a vegetable shop "politics", even though politics clearly affects the environment you operate in (tax rates, bylaws, heck some weird dystopian place could ban vegetable shops entirely!).
