Love the article, I'm jealous of the author's ability to visualize this. I played with this a while ago using small neural networks and state preference to do something similar, the NNs became self tuning PID controllers and the bots could fly around the simulation like hummingbirds. Was pretty neat.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is though the outputs are the same, the LMs not "doing" formal logic, its not in it, it's doing something else that only fools us because many many others have done formal logic in the training set

I read the title and thought it was going to be a rant about how nations will get out of crushing debt...

Perhaps I'm not intelligent enough to understand, Many people don't exercise thinking, many educated and capable people prefer not to, comparing that state to LMs and calling it dangerous intelligence is a bit too much emphasis on the later even of the first part may fit. It could be dangerous, like letting someone who can't drive stick loose in traffic.

The inherent 1st order thinking in that way of thinking... It highlights just how little we understand what we understand, and how utterly ignorant we are of what we don't.

I'm already seeing new "engineers" who cannot work things out without AI holding their hand

Not really, I think it says more about how little intelligence is in the behaviors we value

I'm in a situation where important people have either bought into the con or are subordinate to people who have, so I'm forced to expend time to justify why not to AI when there is a perfectly good classical solution.

Doing formal logic because they memorized the token patterns of humans doing formal logic.

This smells more like guerilla advertising. These things are not getting more intelligent, they are still no smarter than a slime mold, we are just burning more power to make slim mold that eats tokens than yesterday

I've not been a fan of Reddit in a while, but I do appreciate a useful asynchronous human interaction. I think reddit lost the useful humans a few bad ideas ago but I'm not well versed in that drama.

I'm curious what HN minds would consider a useful fix to this cyborg Internet problem. It seems having humans and bots coexisting is problematic.

If you had to start over knowing what could happened and what we should avoid, how would you do it?

Right now the reticulum network stack has my vote, it enables and cripples just the right things to make me think it might help.

But I don't earn my living from the commercial form of the Internet, I find I blame the commercial interest for the bulk of the problems (enabled by human fragility)

But I may just be a crusty old mind.

I'm likely naive, but I'm very excited about a future that abandons the web and builds on reticulum. But I worry that the same flaws will be replicated out of habit instead of using it as a chance to avoid the dark paths.

Reticulum uses a proof of work "stamp" as a user side defense against not like behavior.

PXE is one of those easy to take for granted without appreciation for how much of a PIA it is to get working sometimes.

I run a homelab PXE & NFSboot, so no hard drives in the homelab. Works great until I do something to bork it up.

I have been fine tuning setup scripts to automatically get things going for scratch, but I always find there was one more hack I didn't automate last time.

iPXE is on my to-learn list.

I'm sorry, David, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Sounds like adict talk to me ;) Seriously though, the legit claims of benefits are from people who need outreach and don't want to pay for advertising. But your favorite taco truck gets attention while you get to slip into depressive oblivion.

I wonder I'd that's the math for the ludicrous space data center ideas "floating" around...
