Remember: “no mistakes “.

Converting works really well when you have an oracle (something that you can test against and that is comprehensive)

I cannot begin to tell you how many places I have seen where this is fundamentally not the case. Not only are those tests missing, the software is fundamentally not written to be easily tested and in cases where multiple services across companies are concerned; how would you?

Rewriting via LLM is just not something the caretakers of a legacy banking- og state infrastructure system would countenance (not should they).

I think that is a bit out of the blue. But it is fun to imagine a billboard-sized app for a referendum on burgers or AI.

That will put some sweat on some brows :)

That's an easy option.

But if more an more people changed their attitude, stopped envying jet-setters and instead shamed them for their environmentally reckless attitude, maybe you would see a lot less plane travel, a lot less gas guzzlers, a lot less conspicuous consumption.

Shame works on the vast majority of people. We may lack inherent ethics, but we seldom like to swim against the stream.

I just don't fully agree anymore.

I always cared. But I care more as I age. Why? Because I know (vaguely) the danger and I have ____KIDS____.

Older people usually have kids too. For anyone, ANYONE who accepts/knows the dangers we face to just shrug, knowing it's their own kids and grand kids that will suffer (wars, political upheaval, riots, deaths, migration) - no. I don't buy it.

Principally, it's the ignorance of the people to the things that matters most. Maybe they are partially sticking their heads in the sand a bit. But if it truly was properly reported on prime-time news and so on, they would know, and they would care.

A good argument could be made that precisely because it happens in government and those people aren’t booted out post-haste, then society is apparently a lot more OK with this style of behavior than before.

I think Nixon’s watergate is a good comparison. It wasn’t nothing, but how many larger scams and scandals has Trump and family been through with apparent electoral acceptance?

And if it is so. How big a reaction would you get from the population if another Theranos happened? I don’t think people would care, really. Shrug and move on.

Oh don’t worry. If the US can bail on the treaty signed with Ukraine and repeatedly threaten to not honor NATO commitments, then this is small-fry stuff.

Funny, I thought HN was about substance, not cheerleading.

If you have reason to downvote, present it.

Such as it is - I doubt it, I couldn’t find any papers, so either it goes against someone’s religion or feel free to present your proof where any of the traits of Rust the language has been proven to actually benefit LLM code generation.

Another example of “I like my language and here’s why it is uniquely suitable for $thing” (here AI).

I just asked chatgpt today for research on whether any feature of a programming language which has been identified in studies to make it better suited for agentic coding. Or whether popularity in the data-set has been proven to matter or even cross-language learning (knowledge from one language benefitting the LLM in writing in another).

Aside from popularity, nothing I could dredge up could prove strong correlations with anything else - including types

Heh - good choices. Seems like a poorly reasoned article then.

Accepting the premise of 2000$ spent (I doubt it), the author completely forgets that the collectively saved amount far exceeds the 200$ of a single subscription.

Anyway, if I worked at Adobe, or any company with roughly the same business model, I definitely would feel nervous about now. And I still feel sympathy for the devs. But let’s be honest, Adobe principally benefits its shareholders and other dead weight, not so much the developers.

It is a bad comparison.

One; you are a private individual- not the local shop which simultaneously picks up all free apples only to turn around and make money off of them.

Secondly, while we can’t speak to everyone picking any open source license - there are good examples of people complaining that they are stressed because they either are underfunded or having to maintain critical infrastructure pieces in their spare time - because companies aren’t donating in exchange for the free code.

You can say “don’t”, but the openssl, xz, … maintainers are often aware how much can break if they don’t keep at it - and so for a sense of societal duty they continue.

If your neighbor stops hanging bags of apples by their house it’s not like they have a reasonable expectation that someone is going to die from starvation or anything.

True. It's really cases like this that demonstrate the shortcomings of BSD/MIT licenses -- at least if you are of the position, that companies could and should contribute a sliver of profits back to the projects enabling that success.

(Much like contributing back in taxes for the infrastructure used and the educational system producing the qualified employees. But that may be a bridge too far for some of HNs readership :) )

And I think this point is a poor as any made in the article.

Last I attempted to write some smaller ocaml project I used LLMs for support (but wrote myself). They generally weren’t excellent.

Honestly, types don’t help as much as people want them to. The LLM does best on popular languages, especially those whose use and feel is also mainstream.

That is to say, pick a niche language like Odin, and it may incorrectly start to over-apply Go’isms - knowledge from one language bleeds into how it approaches others.

Hmm. You are right, first thing my white colonial mind is put to is a nice cuppa, followed by manipulating the natives to war amongst themselves.

Come on.
