Software guy (mainly focusing on Elixir, and... Bash?? and now LuaJIT and Zig?? Perhaps Lean 4 or Idris 2 next?), gamer (board/card/PC/console), philosopher, technologist, former Psych major @ Cornell, sailor, swimmer, biker, scuba diver, music lover (electronica, funk, classical, metal), sometime-partier, philogynist, USAF veteran, and fan of Apple, Tesla, NixOS, open-source, AI, and startups. And that's sort of just the beginning... my mind is fairly voracious. I lean liberal and libertarian, although I love debating anything controversial. Not particularly religious, and on the free will question I am a "metaphysical libertarian incompatibilist."

Physical location: NYC environs

I decided to switch to this more public account from my old alias here, which as of today (2/3/2016) is 2000 days old with 1369 karma.

I am @pmarreck on X/Twitter, https://www.linkedin.com/in/petermarreck/ on linkedin, github.com/pmarreck, [email protected], you can pattern-match the rest... my first and last names are basically a natural primary key, unfortunately

North Korea needs to die, and this keeps it alive.

I am extremely disappointed.

It's not a great example.

The plane lands in the same amount of time whether an autopilot lands it or a human, so there's no incidental cost.

If you let a human SRE handle a problem completely, not only will it likely take longer than an AI, but since that SRE is now deskilled, it may take FAR longer. And that's a cost. Who's going to pay it?

I'm fairly nerdy (or rather, a reformed nerd?) and I haven't met a single "supposedly socially awkward weirdo" person who doesn't have a spark in their eye or who can't ever say anything funny or who can't make a very astute observation that only they end up being qualified to make. Recognize that you are a universe unto yourself and that SOMEone else will notice that.

> It ought to be the case that sheer technical skills can carry you. It is the case that they can't.

I'd adjust this and say that they can carry you, but not as far as if you did both well.

my best friend grew up in westchester and married a woman who went to Stanford who makes an obscene amount of money, so... I get this

Rust has no formal spec? Really?

I went into Nix thinking I would understand the whole thing and then distill a very simplified version, but as it turns out, a significant amount of the complexity is basically required for it to work like it’s supposed to, given how builds and runtimes and dependencies across various languages work, which is unfortunate

there is a legitimate reason why this is the case; it is probably instructive to have you look it up or ask an LLM

The problem is that an immutable build architecture really requires a functional language to be aligned with it

most of us are not interested in doing extra unnecessary manual work to maintain these things or synchronize them across different computers or resurrect them after a certain amount of time not touching them

but you go with your time wasting self
