We work in a technical field. We call ourselves engineers. The academic version is computer SCIENCE. Unsupportable opinions and opinions presented as facts are inexcusable.

"more ... error prone"

Can you prove that? If not, it's just a baseless opinion.

What is his definition of better? It sounds like he thinks it's entirely objective, so he should be able to express it clearly and logically.

Does he think that it's technically more powerful? Again he should be able to prove that if that's the case.

Otherwise he's just giving a shitty opinion, and should say that.

I think the claim is nonsense because with inline assembler there is nothing that you cannot express in C that you can with LLVM. So the decision between the two is opinion.

Can you show a proof for that claim?

I believe it to be nonsense.

"If you think of a type as a set of possible values"

You can't do that! You fall foul of Russell's paradox - sets as types simply don't work!

That looks absolutely revolting.

It looks like when you bite it it would just shatter everywhere and all that grim looking meat and cheese would slop down onto your hand.

Wow - that is so totally different to how we look at class in the UK. I think what I'm thinking of the class divide, you might call the old-money, new-money divide.

So if it's just about money, what would you call a fifth generation Baronet who was educated at Eton and Oxford, served as an officer in a prestigious Army regiment, listens to Radio 4, reads the Telegraph, never watches TV and likes to walk in the country, but happens to be poor in his old age? It's insane to call him working class, just because he's poor. Just like it's insane to call someone like David Beckham upper class - everything about the man is still working class.

The cheeky mods have changed the title, so your comment no longer makes any sense.

I'm from the UK, and I think here class has nothing to do with money. It has something to do with education, but more to do with background, especially family background, culture, taste, leisure activities and so on.

It also has a lot to do with our system of peerage and nobility. I don't think you're truly upper class unless you are elevated to the peerage or in some other way decorated.

In the UK you can be destitute but upper class, and a millionaire but still working class.

I wouldn't describe most people who work at Facebook and Google as being upper class. They may earn above average when you look at all workers, but I think upper class is old money, privately education with independent wealth and social power. I don't think that describes most geeks.

Edit: I think in the US a Senator would be upper class, some random Google employee is probably middle-middle at best.

I retract that then, but I honestly think that anti-intellectualism is a serious and disturbing problem in the tech community. It's like these people want to take us to a dark age of not really understanding anything beyond a superficial level.

Here's what I think people are missing: if you don't go to college then you don't know what you don't know. These people with no education think they know it all anyway, but that's because they're blind to what they could have learned.

It makes me angry because it's so fucking arrogant! There are people working at colleges who have a lifetime of experience, hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and grants, and people just think they can teach themselves all of that without any of their help!

Yeah, I'll just call myself a surgeon and pick it up as I go along. No problem!

Who needs to spend time learning from best academic minds in CS? I can just tweet to some jackass Javascript 'rockstar'!

I'll just teach myself philosophy by reading these library books! I don't need some stuffy Oxford tutor who has been doing it for their whole life passing on their knowledge one-to-one!

Civil engineering? Making mistakes is how you learn!

I don't need a network and credentials! I'll just apply to this government policy institute with my GitHub profile and some retarded PHP library.

You people are fucking deluded. I can't believe tech has become so anti-intellectual.
