> Let's say "anything talking about your product is selling something instead of doing science"

you are gonna be so stunned to find out when more than one thing can be true at the same time

are they doing science? yes. are they selling something? yes.

normally i'd agree, for "most people"

but the author explicitly distinguished between "AI" and "LLM-based AI", and they work for an AI company, where making these distinctions are really important

> I’ve heard from smart, well-informed people who are confident that AI is a few years away from superintelligence, and that superintelligence will be capable of truly terrifying things. And I’ve heard from smart, well-informed people who are equally confident that LLM-based AI is close to a ceiling, that models like Claude won’t even be able to do impressive work in physics, let alone conquer the world.

This is framed as an "or", as if they're contradictory.

IMO, Both of these statements are true.

i'll give you a hint: they're selling something

apple began evaluating ppc in 1991 and it was the stronger choice in the org, from what i've heard. so yes, it was about dropping ppc

> Since it never got past internal demo

it was a joint venture with novell and caldera employees had exposure to the resources, a year or so after the project fell apart.

> just didn’t think there would be enough copies of it to not get lost very quickly

a lot more people had exposure to it than you'd think. it sounds very interesting to us, but honestly, it was probably pretty obvious to everyone involved that it was a bad idea unless apple was serious about dropping ppc

I wouldn't be so pessimistic.

There are a few copies of late shell builds floating around in private collections that have release predicated on the end of someone's legal liability (shall we euphemistically say). I don't know about complete system images, though.

And those guys are all getting up there in years.

there was a common "shock site" called "last measure" that did this. it loaded all sorts of offensive images, blasted a loop of a guy yelling something offensive about pornography, and then proceded to lock up your machine.

No, but we can know that there are zero at fault for Waymo. That's important context.

I am not the one saying "fault doesn't matter as fault is not included in the other stat either".

And yes, I'm aware of the fault of the incidents.

> Waymo says it has 170 million miles and I found 2 fatal accidents it was involved in (fault doesn't matter as fault is not included in the other stat either)

fault absolutely matters. and with two fatal accidents, it should be trivial to find out if waymo is at fault.

it is bad faith, otherwise.

It feels like a made for TV ad for accessibility.

I stopped going. Between the spam and the racist unmoderated AI slop cannon that is discovery there, what's the point

> Non-example 2: There are worries about AI-facilitated biological weapons. I haven’t seen any evidence that’s happening.

Being able to use AI to generate the steps to synthesize proteins means that you can use it to use it to generate the steps to synthesize known toxins. Suddenly, once difficult to attain knowledge is now available to everyone.
