I would recommend Pleroma over Mastodon. Character limits are configurable and I've often seen ones 10k or higher. While Mastodon can see and reply to the fedi posts that long, it may not be able to make them. I reply to people on fedi quite a bit, personally. I think people are conversing.

One trick I have is if I see a video in my sidebar on YT that I don't want to taint my profile, I copy the url without going to it and open it in mpv directly. I tend to watch all my videos in mpv, but I do usually like to have them in my browser history and save them to playlists to find later as well, so I'm just skipping that part. I don't know if this method is perfect, they should still see my IP, but anecdotally I think it's been fine.

There was a lot of hacking done on the modem in the PinePhone, might be worth reusing it.

TOTP at least should be doable on pretty old/basic stuff. I saw someone make a TOTP app for 3DS. Maybe a literal 15 year old Nokia is pushing it, though. This wouldn't cover SMS MFA or the one where you need to hit a button from a specific app, but ideally those would die out anyway...

Hadn't gotten to TFA yet and assumed it was about Cal Newport's book (why I opened the thread). I was confused why AI kept coming up here in the comments, as the book predates the current AI fad. Thanks for pointing this out.

Good ol' Eight Megs and Constantly Swapping holds up well these days when the competition is stuff like vscode. But yeah, I think vim is probably a bit more minimal.

I've used F-Droid for years. It's simple, has good apps that aren't full of ads, just works. PGP... sucks a lot, I never really got along with it. Maybe an age thing, but hardly anyone I've met uses PGP/GPG. Yet I have many friends/family on Matrix.

Yeah, the hostility toward F-Droid and wanting to run their app on LineageOS without gapps made me ditch Signal years ago. It seemed like the main gimmick back then was that it was also your SMS app, which IIRC isn't a choice anymore. So what's the draw now? Why would you not use XMPP+OMEMO or Matrix which work everywhere, don't need a phone number (at all, ever), and have free as in freedom clients and servers? It's insane to me.

I do consider RockChip to be the best for software support.

I like that I can hop on at any time of day, make some progress, hop off any time. I don't have to wake with an alarm and stay out gold farming for 8 hours with 2 or 3 short breaks. I don't have to leave the house. I don't have to talk to anyone. I grew up with MMOs like Graal Online, RuneScape, MapleStory, etc. I have been extremely disappointed by the real world's version of jobs and money. Gold in a game often feels more useful as well. I have actual needs for it. Real life by contrast is vaguely like "work forever and keep making money because that's just what you're supposed to do".

I don't know that I'd call them rare, but secondhand prices are a bit crazy. Knowledge of how cool modded 3DSes were spread on social media and the eBay prices all shot up. It's a similar cost to a Switch 1 IIRC. The non-XL New 3DS did come to America pretty late so they aren't as common over here. I got a Japanese one originally because they weren't out over here at the time. There's also the IPS panel lottery to worry about. If yours has an IPS panel for one or both screens, it's worth a bit more.

The term for those is "shovelware", and the Wii really did have a lot of it.

Later revisions fully fixed RRoD. Not to excuse the original issue, but if you get one of the S models (Trinity or early Corona boards), they're extremely reliable in my experience. I even saw a guy pour a whole can of Mountain Dew Voltage into his Halo Reach edition 360 while it was on (not on purpose, can tipped over) and after some time in front of a space heater it was good to go again. The 360 aged like wine and is very worth modding and playing still today.

This is a good visual to understand it intuitively but your finger itself has a similar issue. In rhythm games like Taiko no Tatsujin and Muse Dash you only have two distinct notes/lanes but you typically play with 4 (or more) keys. A group of 3 red notes in Taiko is way easier to play by alternating hands back and forth than by spamming one key as fast as you can with the same finger. This somewhat applies to Rock Band as well with alternating strumming being useful for long stretches of notes close together, but a lot of people just brute force their way past that without learning alt strumming. For Taiko I think the alternating is much more important and you won't last without learning it.
