I don’t know when various parts of Amazon learned about it, but I don’t think this post means they knew about it on Oct 17. I think they looked at past logs from their honeypots and found a probe for php2shell happened on Oct 17.

For those of us uninformed, what’s the difference between O and o?

I did the same. I found the same about it predating Snowden, but I also found this quote from J Alex Halderman in a remembrance of Peter Eckersley.

> That summer, Edward Snowden came forward with chilling revelations about NSA mass surveillance, and the need for ubiquitous encryption became clearer than ever.

It’s not a claim that it was the instigator, but it seems like it was heavily on their minds.

Before reading this I never considered Snowden could have been a motivator for Let’s Encrypt.

> internet traffic, especially egress traffic, still is absurdly expensive

Are they paying for significant egress? I would assume they primarily serve static files that can be on a cdn

I have another tab open where I am about to buy a home assistant green and start a journey of probably-pointless automations. This is giving me pause. Not about sending hashes to haveibeenpwned, but about the response this got on github.

Thanks for the reply. I remember the original message. I’m glad to see you went and had a good time even if the music wasn’t entirely your cup of tea.

Frost Amphitheater was right before the 24 election, then they had another SF show the day after the election. It was such a vibe shift. Frost was good times kraut rock. The next show was pure electronic anger. I’m not usually into their electronic music but I was that night.

It would be marvelous to see GNU/Linux certified as a UNIX specifically with rms’s preferred GNU/Linux as the name.

This is a neat idea, but I wouldn’t say you aren’t relying on someone else's hosted service. Cloudflare isn’t a public utility quite yet.

They said sex is encoded in it, so it’s probably a sex digit.

edit: I was wrong. Wikipedia says, “The first digit of the sequence number encodes the century of birth (so that centenarians are distinguished from infants)”.

It also says “the last digit of the sequence number is odd for males and even for females”. What a strange system. Essentially the last three digits are two different sequences made to look like one.

I’m wondering the same thing. Then I started wondering whether gp meant Muse the band, because from what I can figure Meta’s Muse won’t make any difference in this, but there’s a slim chance a Muse song with lyrics that can change a software developer’s soul.

This is just me musing. I don’t actually know what Muse’s music is like.

If every human being on the planet was in Texas, Paris would have 0 people per square kilometer

Their revenue is increasing, but their profits have been on a decline despite increased revenue. The table on that page only goes back to 2021, but the trend of increasing revenue and decreasing profits has been going on at least that long. I don’t think ai would have been a factor that far back. Even though github copilot did launch sometime around then, I doubt it was much of a factor.

Thanks. I’ve spent too much time on this site to not have known how that works. Until now I never noticed there are multiple levels of greyed out posts.
