There are many at Anthropic and other labs who do in fact think this way. In a true AI maximalist world the stock market would be crashing due to the value of future cash flows being obliterated. So in a sense AI maximalism isn't needed to justify these valuations, it's almost the opposite.

This is an extreme stretch before you even get into the fact that Pink Floyd is famously not American.

This assumes the set of tasks we want to use AI for is static. I don't think that assumption is true, it definitely hasn't been true up to this point.

I don't think toiling away at mundane tasks is the only way to build expertise in a field, or even a particularly good one. Today's farmers barely touch hand tools anymore and they're able to produce crops just fine.

We know how this goes, at least in broad strokes. We've been through it before, just not with "knowledge" work. If there is demand for something then supply will show up to provide it.

Some jobs will stick around in vastly diminished numbers with tasks that are completely different than what they used to be to produce the same output (e.g. farmer). Other jobs will be eliminated entirely (e.g. switchboard operator). I'm guessing things like software engineering will go the way of the farmer, with the main unknown being just how much demand for software there is.

Well considering the page is currently full of racial slurs, I think we can answer one of those questions at least.

It's nice to think there was some sort of plan, but the truth is much scarier.

The overwhelming majority of things I buy are things I've bought before. Alexa having access to my Amazon order history means I can just say "order a new water filter for my fridge" and the correct item shows up the next day. Far from life changing, but it's a feature I use somewhat frequently these days. Similarly, I would trust an AI to put in my usual Chipotle order or pizza from my local pizza joint.

I wouldn't want it to pick food for me from a place I've never been, though to be honest with enough order history it could probably do a decent job at it.

Retirees relying on short term equity returns to cover expenses only have themselves to blame.

It's just a fact that Claude has already been used to commit war crimes and Anthropic has had zero issue with it. I don't know what else there is to say about it.

Also, not that it really matters but building a fully autonomous kill bot is not actually a war crime.

I didn't say or even imply that OpenAI and Anthropic are equally bad on this front. It's just not accurate to say Anthropic has issues with the US military using Claude to commit war crimes. They don't.

Anthropic is perfectly fine with the US government using Claude to commit war crimes. The US military has done hundreds of extra-judicial killings in the waters around South America over the last year and Anthropic hasn't had anything to say about that.

Just goes to show how desperate they are for compute. It's definitely a brand risk for them, but failing to keep the treadmill going is an existential risk.

They removed him due to fear of reprisal from the federal government. How could that have nothing to do with free speech?
