So you're kinda looking for a "I want to allow this software to do whatever it wants - I accept all risks?" button? And with each new update you're re-evaluate?

I think it's coasting on that prestige of being FAANG. People still want it on their resume. I share this from time to time but I interviewed there at the same time I interviewed at Facebook (right before the name change). And the difference was night and day. Amazon truly treated me like cattle. Get in, do the automated Leetcode/HackerRank thing. Canned conversations. Facebook at least _seemed_ like they were rooting for my success the entire time.

This is what I've heard from my friends both there and at Meta. It definitely doesn't carry the prestige it once did. It's more like, "willing to get yelled at, be afraid of being put on a PIP every day, and trying to ensure output outpaces your peers". That's sad, but it's where the industry is at so many places right now.

Oh man, those early days of XDA forums and SenseUI roms on my NexusOne. Those were truly a thing of beauty. We still haven't gotten back to that level. I'm with you though, I stopped playing and moved to a stock device. Then I moved back to an iPhone and have been completely stock ever since. I haven't been excited about an iPhone since the 10 released. After that I think, "oh cool, another rectangle". "A grid of icons"... "The best camera Apple's ever put in a phone.... how wonderful".

But will they? We've been trained to accept slop at every turn. Food tastes worse and we just accept it (society as a whole - not saying you or I personally). I'm sure Disney has competent product people watching over this. They'll A/B test their way into "maximum amount of ads they can show before losing a critical mass of users". They'll optimize. Folks will get used to that as "the new normal". Disney will adjust from time to time to show more ads as people allow.

I do agree though. It seems like pretty bad behavior to charge 20 dollars AND insisting on showering us with ads.

Here's the thing though, those "alternatives" don't always hit the mark. I've sure Inkscape and Affinity's vector programs do a fine job. I've been an Illustrator user since the 90's so... the shortcuts, the workflows are all burned into my brain. I truly enjoy it. If Adobe had a Linux version, I'd gladly pay the 20 bucks a month for it. But the best we've ever gotten is Affinity allowing some shortcut editing and it partially working under Wine - as long as you aren't using HiDPI.

I downloaded this on one of my Linux laptops this morning. Immediately I did some quick editing/drawing and was like, "well, this completely fits my needs for SVG editing now".

> They will probably all be abandoned within the year.

This could be a proclamation for ALL vibe coded software. As a matter of fact, I think this is what marks software as "Vibe Coded". It's fun while the vibes last. The first few GitHub issues bring excitement because, "hey! people are actually using my project!". So the author prompts a few bugfixes or features. Then the GitHub issues become unmanageable. The author doesn't really KNOW why things aren't working. They can't find anything in the codebase without grep (this is true for the agents too). After awhile, it's not a good vibe anymore.

I mean... I have a 34" widescreen, and yet, I spend most of my time on my laptop screen. So having multiple workspaces is pretty helpful for focus. I think your theory is a sound one. Once they realized their main business is a single screen with ONE APP focused at a time (yes I know, iPad can do more, Duo will also do more), they stopped caring about anything else.

10.5 Leopard was my peak. 10.6 Snow Leopard improved on its stability but had a touch of visible regretion (in my opinion). After that, I haven't really been happy with any release. Obviously some things have improved but... 10.5 was branded Unix, the UI was beautiful. It felt solid.

It sure does feel that way. But I've often maintained that Apple took a look at how people were using features like this on other operating systems and said, "NO! We're gonna 'think different'!" And no one liked their way of "thinking different". But they keep doubling down, believing that once we see the genius, we'll all come around.

I haven't yet come around. Unix had it figured out back in CDE days. i3 was my happy place... now it's Niri. As long as I can get to my workspace with a key combo THAT I DEFINE, I'm probably okay.

Oh man, I LOVED newsgroups back when they were being used for their intended purpose! I got a lot of help on the Delphi programming group back in the day. Every day was a new adventure of posts - and even some valuable flame-wars. I'm sure some of that still exists but most folks moved to PHP bulletin boards, and then on to other platforms like Discord/Telegram.

The launch is exactly what convinced me to get one. My brother-in-law had a Model S that he took me on a ride in. From a dead stop, he floored it and I was sold. The Model 3 has a pretty decent ride too (the Highland refresh).

Yeah, I'm actually pretty mechanically inclined but for some reason, I just don't want to bring any tools near this thing.... it feels like an appliance!

Loco is probably what the parent is asking for :). It paints itself as Rust-on-Rails.

I have prompted a LOT of Go in the past few months. While LLMs do indeed know Go very well, the amount of over-abstraction I'm seeing is awful. It's not at all indicative of code that I'd write myself. The whole point of Go is to have a language that is immediately approachable by juniors. And I've tried to keep my code in that lane. The reason I won't prompt Rust at all, is that I know it'll output working code... that I likely will not understand. (that's not the LLM's fault)
