*Builder* • *Integrator* • *Programmer*

## Interests/Expertise: lighting control, AV, networking, and building automation. Tends to wire things first, script later, and document both. Prefers clean systems, clear contracts, and quiet gear.

## Projects & Tools - Smart homes, resorts, and hybrid commercial installs (Lutron, Savant, Ubiquiti, PDK) - Local-first software: Python (uv, Flask, SQLite), Flutter, Markdown automation - System Surveyor, Savant Blueprint, Caddy, Gooey, Quarto, Mattermost

## Habits/Intentions - Builds idempotent scripts and human-readable docs - Avoids buzzwords, cloud bloat, and overpromising - Believes good integrations vanish when done right

## Currently Mapping smarter workflows between the field, the rack, and the repo.

Us too, consider using your bots to migrate your tailnet to headscale. Daily driving Headscale + Headplane + Tailscale’s graciously provided/compatible native apps makes me feel like my devices are truly under my control.

I used this guys thing https://clima.protoart.net/ after someone mentioned it in an HN comment last summer, then used claude to extend it this summer. A year in, I’m very pleased. Matter or thread would be nice, but these are super straightforward out of the box and totally local.

The manufacturer documentation [0] for everything is great and it was perfect for my goal of getting them to show up in Savant as native thermostats [1] (likely beyond typical scope for split units).

I did a similar thing, heavily aided by Claude, after seeing the protart modules posted here on HN last year. https://github.com/samstevenm/minisplit-local-public

Apologies for the Claudish, especially if anyone wades through the blog posts. I cringe when I reread them, but having some documentation on a working system is better than the ~none I was publishing before.

As a higher level comment points out, my fear is that Flock will end up being the straw man, happily torn down in favor of more outwardly palatable but privately onerous player(s).
Comment · 2 months ago
Exactly my thoughts. Flock has been brazen on so many things, that second-movers with a modicum of political savvy can come assuage all the major Flock-FUD, while in fact being significantly worse.

>sympathetic with the Chinese

and related to, with all that holds in an Eastern mindset. My adoptive grandmother was born in Shanghai in 1927. To my knowledge she never returned to Mainland China, partially because her relatives wen Telswhere when the communists came in.

edit: fixed one errant `t`

It might be helpful to note that this article was written for the FT (as he mentions at the very bottom.) While it aphoristically may make a “pre out of you and me,” I presume neither the author, nor the subscribership of FT _are_ indeed (or wish to be) constrained to the language of a typical 10-year-old. Presumably the same would apply to the readership of HN.

We don’t know if the author _can_ explain it like we’re ten, but I think we can be reasonably certain they understandably chose not to.

Indeed, TFA isn’t exactly pellucid

Neither did the author

And whatever’s worse than screw for copying presumable pngs as .webp or whatever that format is

The apps definitely know. Horsemen example: If you screenshot on Amazon (and Business version) iOS apps, it “helpfully” pops its own share sheet.

Do you/should you (we) really expect that though? I regularly use color filters on my apple devices— grayscale to avoid distractions during the day and red tint at night. More recently I’ve been using the motion dots. I don’t know that I can say with confidence that I never want any of those “personal-perceptional-modifiers” to appear in a screenshot, but for most folks, I would guess it’s approximately never.

User said “Clean.” Starting Claude cleanup.

The following command contains an expansion would you lime to allow the following command to run on your computer:

    `sudo rm -rf ~/ .claude`
1. Always 2. Yes 3. Type something else.
