After decades spending a small fortune for crappy results, I found a Syrian with a modest clinic in Madrid that's dirty cheap and gets things done.

Just before, some lady gave me a 5k€ budget (to start) and one year depressing horizon. This guy got me going for 1k€ in less than a month.

Half of our system is running on 2002 versions software. To my desperation, my calls for updating has been persistently denied. There're no technical reasons to keep it as is, it's more about wetware issues.

We still use dBase files in some point as transient format, not using dBase as such though. Oh, and plenty of positional text files, but that's more a question of interop with partners.

So we better let some world-wide bureaucracy restrict what we're allowed to do without any evidence, right?

A cigarette puff is much stronger than vaping, maybe restrictions in nicotine concentration are counterproductive because this way you keep sucking without ever getting the hit. Unpleasant? IDK, it's been a very long time since I quit, but I don't remember it as such, only bad when exercising.

Not funny. Smoking restrictions weren't put in place because it's addictive, but because it causes cancer. WHO and others are conflating both to restrict vaping, because it's convenient for them. AFAIK there's no strong evidence vaping causes cancer. Is it addictive? Sure, nicotine is. This headline really crossed a line.

Even if you don't buy from China directly, you can't prevent local brands outsourcing their production, because all of them do It.

Public pool, city owned. August daily was less than 1€/day. Now I'm taking classes (my style... has room for improvement) not sure about the price for the winter months, but it's subsidized so not very high.

TBH, gyms have lower prices now over here. You can find a decent subscription for 30€/month, half of what used to be. But they're overcrowded. For me the main factor is time. I end up wasting a lot of time waiting for a free spot or shower, changing clothes, etc. Training at home is much simpler. Combined with a couple of days out swimming or running, a better solution, for me anyway.

Edit: between my previous comment and this one, I've completed my daily home routine :-)

Looks promising. After a shitty year with terrible hips pain (doctors said it was about muscles pinching a nerve) daily swimming has made the pain completely disappear. Motorbike riding and now some kettlebells exercises are doing the same for the long term rotator cuff problem.

I'm in my better shape in the last 30 years, maybe in my entire life. The most surprising thing is how simple, cheap and little time consuming it's been. Compared to gym subscription, the swimming pool, rubber mat and couple of kettlebells are spare change.

"Create shareholder value at my current startup" obviously isn't going to scratch that itch in the same way.

I would add a little nuance. One thing is your job isn't advancing Humanity Progress in a very direct and unambiguous way, say you work for some Very Important Organization that Does Good All the Time. Another thing is your job is totally useless or even harmful to society.

Maybe most of us are in between?

I've worked at dysfunctional companies that made me personally unhappy (busyworks, company politics, waste, bad bosses, bad teammates...) that somehow made some good things in the grand scheme of things, other that made me very happy with more neutral results.

Someone has to do mundane things, even to raise children and give a chance to the next generation to improve the world.

I don't believe putting too much thought in purpose is healthy.

I've made a complete desk with three shelves under the top and a compartment for the desktop computer. Twice. Using standard 244x122 cm planches and some screws. Price depends on the quality of the wood you choose. Shops will cut it to pieces for no extra money. Unfortunately I have no photos and lost the design, but I'm confident I would recreate it in minutes.

It's completely functional and not ugly. Again, you can choose real wood or some of those composites. Also maybe changing screw system (the original setup is like the one showed in TFA) you could make it nicer. I bet there are tons of designs like that out there.

Or you have the regrets when you needed to speak up and you didn't because you value your job security more than your duty: crooked or woefully incompetent boss. In the army instructors strongly warned about jumping chain of command. But you know, sometimes it gets very ugly, specially when they come after you.

These roles should all be result of direct vote.

I disagree. That's an executive power position for an entity that lacks sovereignty. Giving it the legitimacy of direct vote is highly problematic.

Start by giving more power to parliament.

That seems similar to the "God give me patience, but I need it RIGHT NOW" prayer.

I work partly supporting users. It's been very frustrating and this interesting post has helped me to put the finger on the reason.

It only works when you have a path to not only listen but also improve the situation. If 10% of calls or emails are related to X and you can solve X, then you can reduce 10% of calls or emails. Otherwise is just fixing problems manually but not going to the root cause.

I just realized that I use more different kind of stores and transportation to shop than ever. I walk for groceries, ride the motorbike to malls for monthly or yearly buys like clothing or light electronics, take the metro to specialized stores for heavier items and buy online hard-to-find or high-margin-elsewhere stuff. Also online buys are seldom delivered home, but to a nearby convenience store because work hours match delivery hours.

Thinking of changing this distribution is highly disturbing because of time wasted, much more limited options and huge price differences. Of course YMMV depending on location, Madrid here... the world the article describes is totally alien to me.
