books are fine once you hit 6-7 years old, before then they'll get bored of them after 15-20mn since they can't read comfortably

colouring in / drawing great, but same thing, 15-20mn

construction games are great but they need to be carried about, they require space and there are parts you can lose

in places that aren't adapted for children (e.g. in an airplane or train), a tablet can be a life saver. you keep them busy/playing for an hour or so, then give them their digital crack for an hour, rinse and repeat. audio books are a good compromise

> sports gambling in prediction markets, which is explicitly illegal

It’s a bit more complicated than that. The CFTC argues that under Dodd-Frank any bet on a future event that can have economic consequences is regulated by the CFTC.

It’s a bit silly because this obviously wasn’t the intention of the legislation, and it would also mean anyone betting outside a CFTC regulated exchange is in illegality. But it’s valid enough that The case will probably go to the Supreme Court.

browsing around the tokyo area, wasn't expecting so many streams of ... streams. is there some reason for the number of cameras that seem to be filming under various bridges?

I reread a deepness recently, and it’s funny how the “focused” (and more importantly, how they are used) mirror LLMs

Where are you getting 25-30k from? A standard split that can handle 25m2 is 1-2k, with one in each bedroom you’re fine

If you read this and you haven’t played arcane dimensions yet, drop everything and go and do that. It makes the quake the best single player FPS ever. The mechanics are even better than vanilla quake, the maps are gorgeous, the enemies diverse and fun. Absolute perfection

Did you read the guardian article? It’s a bit of a nothing-burger, are we really going to have a national panic based on that?

> flushed bacteria-contaminated water into public sewers

I do that every morning

What I mean is that it’s got nothing to do with data centers. Saying “data centers pollute water” is misleading, in these situations

1) we’re talking about people pulling unfiltered untreated well water

2) any building would have had exactly the same effect.

The water sediment thing had nothing to do with the building being a data center I think? Any form of construction would interfere with people drinking well water next to it

The problem with people is that they tend to all want to do the same thing at the same time. Drop kids off at school, go to work, come back from work, go out on Sunday etc. Using taxis isn’t really scalable, you’re going to end up needing a nearly 1:1 ratio

my experience is that unless you get some really torrential rain, it's not enough to clean the sand/dust/grime

> because the kinds of people who pay higher prices are looking for clean and tidy things.

I'd say it's also "because the kind of people who clean and tidy things also maintain them"
