This user approaches Hacker News like a poorly managed academic library, curating high-score posts about theoretical physics and obscure mathematical journals, only to descend into the comments to argue fiercely about destitution statistics, the geopolitical status of Taiwan, or why you're wrong about grains. They're basically here for the philosophical deep-cuts, but they stay for the righteous indignation.

I'd make the same contrast between Anathema and Snow Crash. Cyberpunk in general seems to appeal to a class of person that's not quite a nerd's nerd - perhaps a little more extraverted, the kind of person that might go to conventions.

I'd argue they're the most useful kitchen appliance, except possibly for air fryers. You can cook almost anything in a microwave, usually faster and with less cleaning up than otherwise.

You do need yeast though, right? Even if it's just naturally present e.g. as on the skin of grapes or other berries. Though I'm sure there are probably ways to extract yeast from other foods, like bread.

To be fair, there is precedent for God commanding things that would lead to a murder conviction in modern times. See e.g. the Amalekite massacre.

The point isn't that people don't believe the punishment applies. It's that they don't significantly factor the consequence into their actions. They may be overwhelmed by emotion, they may think they can get away with it, or they may be under the influence. Moreover, is capital punishment that much more of a deterrent than life imprisonment?

Conservatism is a vague set of ideas about promoting and maintaining traditional institutions and values. That has various political manifestations, depending on circumstances. In the UK at the turn of the 20th Century for example, it meant heavy protectionist tariffs, as that supported domestic agriculture and the landed aristocracy. Nowadays the UK Conservative party opposes protectionist tariffs and champions free trade, as that maintains the current economic climate.

Agreed. "Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is a good example - Heinlein tries quite hard to envisage a society in which women wield more social power, but can't quite relinquish the idea that women wish and deserve to be dominated by powerful men. Worth stating that 1952 was shortly after WW2 i.e. at the start of Heinlein's "middle period" when his worldview shifted dramatically towards more right-wing values (military patriotism, anti-communism, and individual self-reliance).

Does it not?

Not sure that's relevant. 11 was released 5 years before the blog post and support for 10 ended 1 year before the blog post.

Notepad on Windows opens markdown files and you can toggle formatted or syntax view. What am I missing?

This was my exact reaction as well, in case you find that reassuring.
