Not familiar with NFS, but shouldn't it have been possible to attribute the mystery traffic by port number by sniffing ?

Console applications, which do not have win32 windows with message pumps can be closed with alt-f4.

For GUI apps it sends a WM_CLOSE, because that's they way to "close" a GUI application.

For console applications it sends a message through the "Console control handler". Which the console subsystem no longer lets the application properly handle and kills the process summarily anyway.

Note that I keep saying "application" because that has been the terminology in windows forever. "GUI apps" and "console apps" were a thing before mobile.

ctrl-f4 is used in MDI applications to close one document window of a multi-document application. alt-f4 to close the whole application.

Well, I say "is used", but nothing in Windows is consistent anymore. Especially since web browsers started disrespecting the OS shortcuts. Now it seems like every application follows the web browser UI conventions instead of OS ones.

The book I mentioned is about languages and their spread through history, not religion.

would you recommend a more recent book comparable to "Empires of the Word" by Nicholas Ostler on the subject of languages ? I am really enjoying the book, but it's over 20 years old at this point. I wonder how much of the information is out of date now.

Equivalent in Windows is Registered I/O (RIO) for sockets.

Windows network development is really, really different from Unixy stuff. But you might have fun :)

Seems plausible since FIN only means “I’m done sending” also called a “half close”.

FTP has different data and command connections so the server may not have an outstanding read to detect the data connection break.

But.. it should still clean up both when the command connection dies

During the recent shutdown, SFO was one of the airports with no TSA backlogs because they weren't dependent on the DHS funds in question.

I don't know much about the Google Vision API that it claims to use, but uploading the same passport photo of mine twice produced wildly different results in the "data" tab.

There are fields like interests, income, biases/predjudices which vary the most so I assume that's just the site pulling things from its own database of racist stereotypes ?

Also, a vertical mouse works wonders for similar mouse-related tendon issues.

It’s the Java version of the game, not a game version of Java.

There’s a native version called bedrock
