The egos of these mathematicians is not what is important here, and they should get over themselves. The goals and values should be about advancing mathematics and, by proxy, humanity. It’s not about them.

That said, change is difficult for most. Let’s give them grace and have patience as they work through the stages of grief. Once they come to accept this new reality, let’s hope they can learn to embrace this new technology to continue the work of advancing the frontier.

Can’t help but lol. Tremendous!

Absolutely agree. So much feigned outrage in these articles (and HN comments) about the LLM models doing x.

Yesterday everyone was all worked up about OpenAI generating an image with a signature on it.

Caveat emptor. Don’t be an idiot. Grow up. Make informed decisions regarding your use of these products and take responsibility for those decisions.

I really don’t understand why anyone would think they are entitled to any part of a derivative of a published piece. Why publish if not to help advance humanity, just like all who came before you and contributed to your success/ability? This is quite literally the bedrock of the progress of human civilization. As long as they aren’t straight up reproducing a direct copy of the original work.

If you want to keep it to yourself so only you can benefit from it, then keep it private. Otherwise, why don’t you get to work on the next big idea.

Sounds like a perfect application of AI. Some jobs should be automated.

Sadly, it’s too late. It’s quite clear we’re on track to a totalitarian surveillance state.

Ring cameras recording your movements around the neighborhood.

Flock (and other government) cameras recording all vehicle movements.

Cell towers and WiFi APs recording device ids and movements.

Recent legislation requiring driver monitoring systems in cars. Plus the fact that any EV can be remotely controlled and disabled.

And now we have AI systems that can actually aggregate and correlate all this data.

It’s over. We’re too far down this slippery slope, there’s no turning back now.

The phone alerts sound quite dystopian and unsettling. As if the earth shaking and feeling of imminent doom wasn’t chaotic enough, now you have yet another element of annoyance and distress added to the mix as a cherry on top. Just enough of a distraction in a life/death situation to tilt the scales in a negative direction.

I guess his big bet on world models didn’t pay off quickly enough

In an environment without accountability, higher pay is just more incentive to lay low and not take any personal risk. Why do anything other than the bare minimum when there is no upside? In a bureaucracy where responsibility is diffused and the culture is purely political and not merit/performance-based, few are willing to step out of line to do the right thing.

The people who climb to the top aren’t the ones who took a risk and got the reward. Quite the opposite, they’re the ones who learned to play the game and didn’t upset the power structure by rocking the boat. No one is going to tell the emperor he has no clothes when the path to power is political and has no grounding in reality.

Highly conscientious, intrinsically motivated people will do the right thing in any environment. And those people don’t last long in political/bureaucratic environments where the incentives are misaligned.

You’re on the right track, I think. But, I wouldn’t say it’s about the pay to attract competent workers. I think it has more to do with the incentive structures once you’re in. Incentives and performance management are fundamental problem in civil service. The incentives to set high standards and hold individuals accountable simply do not exist.

The one and only exception is the military, because lives are literally on the line in a way that is not at all abstract.

I guess people will always find something to gripe about.

Agree. Being smart, competent, and high in conscientiousness is more important than any highly specific “qualification”. It’s not about checking a bunch of boxes. If you have a track record of getting shit done, you’ll have something to contribute.

Turns out, SOTA llms are great at finding and fixing bugs in code. Too bad companies like Anthropic are doing everything they can to stop these reprehensible acts of safety.
