I've never even thought about buying shinkansen tickets online, as the machine and staff are both efficient. I'm not in a touristy area, so lines are usually short; it's often quicker to buy at the counter than to use the machine.

Also, cool to see you here. I've come across a few of your books over the years.

screenshots inside an excel file (even of spreadsheets) are a preferred method of communication by many Japanese people in the workplace. You have to see it to believe it.

Curious about this school; I live in Japan with my family.

I knew some rather unscrupulous people in the 98-03 period who'd take items off of shelves in the walmart, remove the packaging and walk over to customer service for a cash refund, having never bought anything or even leaving the store. They'd walk out with cash in hand.

Having worked in retail, they basically knew that nobody in that store really cared (loss prevention officers, staff, managers... nobody seemed to care.)

uncrossy. About twice a week I go and do the last few days of puzzles. Ever since I first saw it released here on HN.

If it's weekdays... everyone IS at school or work.

Also in Japan, there are laws about posting others' faces online without permission, so Japanese creators often will only put content without people online, as it is easier that blurring out their faces, asking for permission, or facing repercussions.

I've been here for 15 years, use Japanese for 90% of my work, have a child here AND permanent residency. And even I'm considering leaving Japan.

I can't imagine many people in their first few years, facing these changes, desiring the long term goal of PR now.

agreed! Even the look on someone's face can spoil a book that I'm in the middle of reading. Of course, this depends on the book, but generally I don't talk about a book until I'm done with it.

Glue and counter-sunk screws, with a dowel (I prefer a contrasting color) plug on top. Flush cut or even slightly protruding, whichever style you like. Looks great, can't fail, super easy. I've done all kinds of joinery, of course rabbets, dovetails, all that good stuff... is good. But y'know what else is good? A finished bookshelf holding a bunch of books!

I should have gotten a track saw: I basically use my circular saw like one, which is a pain.

I built a three-legged table from the anarchists design book. I've been using it every single family meal for 6 years now. So satisfying.

MediaQuery.of(context).isFolded

This is decent brand-new mountain bike territory.

A cube. With six square displays. No buttons, no bevels.
