Yes! I meant to link to rctestflight and not RCLifeOn. Amazing stuff. Especially the latest ground effect series.

I've added a list of my favorite channels to my comment.

I burnt out hard after almost 20 years programming, mostly web things, last decade in the full-stack JavaScript ecosystem. Last year I started building simple electronic stuff with the Raspberry Pi Pico board. It's not far off from programming and I had to learn C (Python feels too JS somehow), but being able to literally move things with electrons and code and talk directly to the metal awakened something in me.

I got YouTube Premium, unsubscribed from all the "funny stuff" and subscribed to makers, builders, creators, electronic, aviation, etc. channels only. I am AMAZED at what you can build right now in your own home. I am building an electromagnetic jet engine from scratch. It sounds crazy when you say it out loud but it's the 2023 equivalent of assembling model gliders from balsa wood decades ago.

Here are a few channels that inspired and helped me the most:

Fantastic explanation of how electricity/circuits/elements work:

https://www.youtube.com/@ELECTRONOOBS

https://www.youtube.com/@greatscottlab

These guys are into aviation and actually iterate on their projects:

https://www.youtube.com/@rctestflight

https://www.youtube.com/@TomStantonEngineering

These two are wizards of explaining physics and engineering:

https://www.youtube.com/@TheActionLab

https://www.youtube.com/@Nighthawkinlight

I can't even comprehend the level of engineering this guy does in his garage:

https://www.youtube.com/@StuffMadeHere

PS. If you're getting into electronics from programming it's really, I mean really easy, to do the programming bits which most makers struggle with (because they are pros in circuits and other things). A lot of the learning curve is stuff like "what is a compiler" or "how to install an IDE" which you got covered.

https://ciechanow.ski hands down. The front page is just the latest post in it's entirety. The format and interactivity and content is amazing.

I spent a few years developing a Japanese-English dictionary that had searchable example sentences. Full text indexing for Japanese is a nightmare. I used MeCab, Kumon, and Kuromoji for morphological analysis and tokenization, you should check them out. I played a bit with Chinese and it was relatively easy (compared to Japanese). Korean I suppose is somewhere in-between those two.

AFAIK there is nothing out there for East Asian languages that works as good as their romanized counterparts. They work pretty ok with text book, perfect grammar, and easy kanji material. They fall apart completely on casual human text/speech.

Do not attempt to solve this problem yourself! I'm guessing only the likes of Google and ML experts will be able to tackle this.

That's most definitely true. But describing one's character or predicting behavior based on that is simply random stereotyping. And even if we could make some use of it, the astrology crowd would never embrace it.

Sorry, I don't remember. But it was definitely written by a Prof. Something Something, PhD. And of course it had a mesmerizing rendering of some cosmic occurrence on the cover.

Another way I noticed that makes "smart" people believe in bullshit is using very scientific language and vague science concepts.

I noticed one of my friends (college educated and an ex FAANG executive) reading a book about astrology that basically tried to explain it with science. She made me read a chapter to prove that it's not bullshit. And it really didn't "sound" bullshit, and the author used many scientific terms and quoting papers on quantum mechanics and referring to astronomy. But once you actually tried to process the gist of it it was complete nonsense, literally zero information or stated facts. A horoscope dressed in scientific language.

It's not about the Roth IRA. It's about him using politics and influencing the public for personal gains. And those gains are based on arming evil agencies with evil weapons. And he's not even trying to hide it, calling it Palantir.

An alternative to the Apple ecosystem. Same functionality and range of products, different design choices.

e.g. laptops with matte displays and columnar layout keyboards. Think different.

How about showing the comments directly on the video, at a specific time, and a specific place.

Something like Soundcloud comments but for video.

Asian video platforms used to do that. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOMMQmYwd4I

It's totally crazy but can be made much more coherent. Would be useful to have comments at a specific time and place on the screen just for very accurate pointers/comments.

Yes, it was my favorite for a while. But recently I switched to GraphCMS for more basic data structure and I love it. Especially the UI.

I think what the market is missing is a sort of locally run CMS that is file based with Sqlite and managed completely with Git. Something that can can be moved around with project easily and have great version control.

Let's say you have a /content folder in your project that is it's own separate git repo, and there you have .md or .txt or sqlite files, and your assets, and there's a browser based client to manage it that runs locally.

I'm a fullstack JavaScript dev. I used to write everything in pure React and serve it with Express on Node but two years ago I started experimenting with all the fancy new frameworks and now my every project is:

- Gatsby or Next depending on how dynamic the content is

- Firebase for db, auth, and bucket storage, and sometimes hosting

- Vercel for NextJS hosting

- Recoil for state management; after years of using Redux it feels amazing, like it's a part of React

- ImmerJS for immutability

- SASS for CSS

I love my current stack. It definitely took a while to make everything work together smoothly. I don't understand the complaints about modern web dev. I've been building websites for almost 20 years and this is the most productive and fast I've ever been.

The only thing I still haven't figured out is CMS. Tried all of the fancy new headless CMSs but nothing works for me. Working on my own.

The Polish government always had a thing for people in funny hats. Miners are treated like royalty there. Poland just loves when people sacrifice themselves for no good reason at all, and the more suffering it brings the better. Miners are portrayed as national heroes everywhere from elementary books to evening news. You can't touch them. And the whole country is scared of clean energy because of Chernobyl. So they proceed to kill millions silently. They also talk shit about Russia all day and then end up getting the worst deal for Russian gas that they are totally dependent on.

We once had a friend staying over for the weekend with her 3-5 year old daughter. My girlfriend took my DSLR camera and they took hundreds of photos. I casually imported everything from the SD card to my Apple Photos library without even looking at it. Few weeks later I was browsing Photos on my iPhone and saw a bunch of photos of my friends in bath washing the little girl. Almost had a heart attack. Deleted everything, cleared cache, disabled auto sync, formatted the SD card many times over. Screamed at my friends and they just laughed at me.

But being wrongfully accused of child abuse is probably my biggest fear as a grown man. Especially after watching The Hunt (2012) with Mads Mikkelsen. If I were ever to find a child in distress somewhere in public I would never ever try to help it in case someone caught me alone with a kid I don't know. If I see kids walking on the street I immediately change direction just to not look like I follow their path. I just can't.
