I recently won the red ribbon, second place, at the Lambtown fiber festival, for my lovely skein of undyed handspun yarn. Weaving it is next. However, I am probably an outlier, and should not be counted.

(It was a full 250g of this fantastical kempy Herdwick, absolutely unlike anything you can get commercially, and I'm honestly more proud of it than of anything I built in six years working at NVIDIA.)

very illegal? under what law? the one that's embedded in the us constitution that asserts that congress shall make no law affecting freedom of speech (and is incorporated against the states)? seems highly unlikely if so

yes, stress can kick a mild autoimmune issue into overload, and once there it can be almost self-sustaining.

what is physically happening is that the body's mast cells release neurotransmitters like histamine and serotonin, causing inflammation (so the immune system can fight some things off) leading to pain, and also fatigue (to encourage you to stay safe at home in the cave conserving energy, or some such story like that -- don't trust any specific just-so story though, especially this one).

the interesting question is what all the other things are that stress you out. i've found dietary triggers are what got me and a lot of my friends; there are some allergy cases out there, and a few friends with long COVID, which is one particularly nasty self-sustaining form. a family member had a terrible decade long episode triggered by contact dermatitis with poison oak. and generally speaking, heat and humidity are stressors too, as are pressure changes (you've heard tell of the little old lady who can tell a storm is coming because of an arthritis flare).

no, it's very hot, and the fans are loud and obnoxious so they keep putting it in data centers near places that don't really want it, and they install lots of natural gas turbines because the grid isn't enough and that's louder too, and then the cooling often needs a lot of water, and -- really unpopular overall, as it turns out!! huge backlash. and that's before, you know, allll the job impacts, which is when it gets ugly and threatens to complicate the whole consumption-driven structure of the economy.

... but the little dgx spark is in the room with us! it's pretty smart-ish, in a pinch!

there's a big constellation of autoinflammatory health issues that affect people, especially the autistic/adhd types who might find their way to Hacker News in large numbers

if you are not already familiar, you should have your doctor go through https://allbrainsbelong.org/clinician-resources/ (this is a nonprofit's project funded through an HHS grant) and see what actually applies to you

Crohn's, irritable bowel syndrome, regular old heartburn, brain fog, chronic fatigue, depression, sleep apnea, hives, rashes, waking up in the middle of the night, heat sensitivities, Ehler-Danlos, joint issues, vascular issues, dizziness on standing, arthritis, long COVID... it's quite the list!!

(and it's really frustrating when (e.g.) a cheap allergy medication can solve half your problems and you go without it for years because no one's thought to connect those dots)

look, there's a lot of room to complain about moving the goalposts of what counts as AI, I get it

but I don't think a simple PID controller in the autopilotnmanaging altitude, heading, and the like has ever been categorized as "AI." Cybernetics, maybe.

even the rules managing the flight envelope and MCAS on the 737 Max, or the Airbus implementations of flight law, sure seem to have relatively few of the attributes that tend to get the label these days

Have you seen https://philo.gay/linecam/ and https://github.com/FlamingSpork/grindstone for the postprocessing code?

(previously on HN frontpage, and before that, at EMF Camp!)

HN quite famously has more than one person posting to it.

It's not just COVID, either. You can get brain fog effects from a variety of things. The first and biggest is sleep apnea (woefully underdosed).

Plenty of things can develop as you grow older. Some of them may have been present all your life and you only start to notice them when your body is a little less resilient. Food sensitivities, for instance -- eat the wrong thing, trigger a major release of histamines (which trigger both the stomach acid and a whole-body response). Too much of that releases other neurotransmitters, too, and you can get Depression and Fatigue too. (And then try changing the whole way you eat while at the bottom of a depressive slump where all the easiest foods are the likeliest triggers!!) Autistic people (plenty of us in tech) are especially predisposed to many of these inflammation-related issues.

If you're brain fogged, see the doctor... and be prepared for a long slog of self advocacy, and maybe shopping around.

Come now! It is clear that the sarcasm indicator wasn't suggesting that the government didn't really announce that. The sarcasm was in the invocation of governmental authority, which is thereby implied to be ill-founded and not worth listening to.

fwiw...

if sugar gives you a headache, this may be related to a gastrointestinal issue (e.g. gluten sensitivity, dietary histamine sensitivity, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth possibly causing its own sensitivities...) The specifics of the cause in your case are between you and your doctor, but i'd like more people to know, especially since these sorts of problems disproportionately affect people with autism and ADHD, long a core Hacker News demographic, and most of us have trouble paying attention to everything our body is feeling in exquisite detail.

other signs of digestive problems in this area may include:

- a pattern of early-afternoon fatigue and brain fog (this is mediated by histamine, which in turn can be caused by a food allergy, a non-allergy food sensitivity, bacteria in the stomach that don't belong there, or the like)

- feeling generally flushed and hot after eating food (more histamine!)

- waking up in the middle of the night, ~4am, especially if you're feeling too hot (also a sign of excess histamine)

- often having an upset stomach, and lots of stomach acid

- increased sensitivity to heat or exercise (mast cell degranulation because your body is already on edge)

- generalized hard-to-place fatigue, brain fog, depression (the whole histamine-response pathway is shot through with various neurotransmitters)

- serious nasal congestion contributing to sleep apnea, and extreme fatigue

now, this is going to be different from person to person, but your doctor's not going to know anything's wrong if you don't tell them!

(and if something like this is the case, it's also the sort of condition that might sometimes has an instant miracle cure, because if you stop releasing the feel-bad neurotransmitters every time you eat, then you suddenly stop feeling terrible!! go figure.)
