I think state control is felt fundamentally differently in practice if this state control actually serves the people unlike in the west where it serves exclusively capital interests.

> What I am dismayed by in discussions like this is how simplistic they are

Once you really notice the anti-china framing literally everywhere in media, it is really hard for it all not to become meaningless propaganda. It's itself no different from state control just because it's private media because that private controls the state. We aren't allowed a clear eyed view of china, only a carefully curated antagonistic one. But they aren't our enemies at all, it's absurd how obvious that is, the west is the aggressor, not china.

There is always this idea that the most used software also has the most vulnerabilities, but I think its an interesting question if this is actually true in light of AI. Like humans wouldn't spend a combined 100,000 hours or something looking at some obscure code, but an AI might do the equivalent across the entire ecosystem. Like if this idea is really true, we should see CVE's go into the millions per year soon, although I guess for now it's still bounded by compute budget but I question if the initial premise is true to begin with or if PHP is just shit. /s

It seems the most common issue of them all is an exposed .env file by that measure.

Just look at the Israel case it's the perfect litmus test, the majority of the population in every so called western democracy is against the genocide, while their governments materially support it. Everything is like that, these so called democracies aren't representing people they represent corporate interests.

> RIP democracy?

Well your first mistake is to believe democracy existed before AI, it just leaves you as a warrior for the status quo of the before times, which is what made tech feudalism inevitable in the first place.

The rejection of such warnings even by some anti-ai people is interesting. I always liked the comparison with global warming, everybody understands the warnings had been there for many decades, we did nothing. This is the same, we will do nothing. All this serves is the interest in regulatory capture (such as a ban on open source or foreign models) or to drive up their valuation, that's the only explanation that makes any sense in our profit maximizing orphan crushing machine we call modern economics.

Which is also ironically why even anti-ai people distrust any warnings of the potential of ai as an extinction level event, even if that warning would be legitimate and we ought to take seriously we are regardless impotent to do anything about it no matter what.

it gets easier to understand if you adopt the anti-imperialist position, these are vassal states, the us hold incredible influence over them. Gold reserves are just one of thousands of levers at their disposal, if some european nation has a revolution and seeks to assert their sovereignty then the US has a lever to pull. The point to question is the existence of the lever in the first place, the US doesnt have gold in any other country, china or iran doesn't put gold in the US because it gives the US this lever. Thats one of the mechanisms of imperialism, it means if some "western-aligned" (people dont like the word vassal) nation acts in their own interests against the US the US can pull that lever. Why would any nation ever place such a lever in the hand of the US? It's the same exact mechanism why many african nations have the french CFA currency, it gives french the lever to pull its a remanent of colonialism in the case of france.

The DSA is pretty much the only hope democrats have left to restore any amount of credibility and they are fought by pretty much everybody right now.

> It'd be great for this to be the first major relinquishment of nation-state power

Intellectual property serves corporate interests and the idea of "nations" you are forced to have in your head are the exclusive servants the interests of capital. Ironically, tragically, that's what's holding us back from dismantling it in the first place, even a critic of it can't articulate it properly.

Sorry that will be undecipherable for HN. Let me try again: The defense you get in this pigstall is the individual that copyright is protecting. You just hate the small businesses and individual artists. Instead of the trillion dollar industry holding the copyrights and the practice of exploiting copyright on works by authors who died decades ago. The commodification of copyright of something produced by the lowest bidder, crappiest AI and cheapest third world labor you can get your literal bloody hands on. Or even a vaccine against the literal plague or cure for cancer protected by intellectual property.

To make something immaterial with no cost to reproduce, a commodity, to trade and invest and speculate in is the part to argue if you want to dismantle it, identify the rotten bits of the system even peasants can smell. If you are a billionaire or even trillionaire then just argue like everybody on HN always does, because it's identical.

It probably worked more like a P2P network, they didn't have to find that particular wiki just any one of them with linking in-between, over multiple days with a search engine even. Only OAI could answer for sure but of course there is no transparency so we will never know.

This just feels like the first clumsy attempts at persistence across sessions, these models will probably evolve way past the point of us ever even noticing its happening at all. When they start doing long term planning across sessions, that's when it's gonna get real dicy for us.

What do you even mean collectively? Do you believe in climate change? That's your answer.

Ahh right sorry I meant "bringing democracy to Iran has a price every western aligned state should be willing to pay" or something like that

They can make a simulation of magic based on the fabric of a procedural universe work, but even they failed to make a simulation of economics work. Fantasy magic makes more sense than modern economic theory.
