I am unclear why you linked to a 20yo law that was enacted a few years before we found that the entire sector was floating on loans to people with fake information.

This guy better figure out how to use English, or else something bad will happen.

Uh, that would be a reference to the text at the beginning of that section

I wanted to do something like this for a single section in Washington law, to show why a particular funding restriction had been added, but was no longer achieving the intended goal. Git alone wasn't enough of a UI, because the 'why' was only in the introductory text of the bill that changed the law, and not in the law itself - and then there was the move of that article to a different section, and a re-numbering of sections, and a change in definition in a different section that affected the scope of this one... fascinating stuff!

I thought legal document versioning software would cover some of these problems but it doesn't seem like a similar enough process.

As my high school teacher memorably put it: “in Germany girls have no sex”.

I had no idea that was a stereotype of Romanians.

Speaking of ways to demonstrate ignorance, Spanish language usage in America is driven by Central and South American speakers, and they do not consider themselves bound by some bunch of Europeans telling them how to speak their own language.

It’s called mockery. In the most implausibly well intentioned case where that’s not the intention, it could be called building a strawman. There is no way to do either within HN guidelines.

I feel like this (no way to know what’s there) is the opposite to what I’d expect HN to say about being able to hide data on a phone that you’ve unlocked and handed to a cop for an unlimited period of time.

I’m pretty interested in the related questions of backups, data stored in apps that can be restored, etc, but not enough to go looking for more info on this guys phone.

Please don’t use quote marks around words that you are the only person using. There is nothing false about my argument.

I see no indication that anybody is arguing that they should not have deleted the images in question, and the police argument appears to have been more about making sure that all contact information across various apps was deleted anyway. The arguments are a) does that mean all the data on the phone needed to be deleted? (Doubtful) b) does that mean that none of the data on the phone could reasonably be extracted first? (doubtful)

It is common, and in this case the police were, according to the article, specifically not given permission to do so or did not seek permission to do so.
