> It's of note that while there about 20% muslims in Israel, there's about zero jewish person in Gaza (there are some israelo-palestinian though) and zero jewish person in Iran. Or close to that.

Not only are there Jews in Iran, they even have a seat permanently reserved in the Iranian parliament.

> I thought ISIS gained power in Syria first, taking advantage of the Syrian civil war which the US explicitly did NOT participate in.

The US absolutely participated (and continues to participate in) the SCW.

Depending on where you are getting your recordings, what you are hearing isn't necessarily the quality that the pilot and ATC hear.

I guess Navalny is a dissident but, man, seeing his name next to Mandela is jarring considering his views.

I noticed in the video that many people onboard A359 were wearing masks. Would those have helped significantly to prevent smoke inhalation?

They have their own origins, motivations and agency; it's a mistake to assume there's someone pulling all the strings (and this goes for all sides).

Like I said, that comment was by no means exclusively negative and I don't recall where I read the more critical take, but it might have been one of the other (many!) posts about Carlin on r/askhistorians.

I don't listen to his podcast, but I understand that Carlin is discredited by most serious historians in general.

What if you were denied opportunities because of your race or gender or something else? Wouldn't you want to know that there barrier is now gone?

(Ignore the Saudi case, since this is almost certainly a cynical gesture to foreigners so we can be more accepting of MBS as being actually a really great guy after all considering what he's doing for women)

That's only if you look at the population of the named cities themselves rather than the population of the city plus the surrounding populates areas.

In Geneva's case, it is composed of several different named cities/towns/etc and those taken together are bigger than Spokane plus the municipalities that comprise its urban area.

How many American expats in other countries bother to learn the local language?
Comment · 2 years ago
To be clear, I am saying it was probably deliberate but only the decision of the local forces rather than from up on high.

It was probably an individual decision rather than high-level but that's only because the Israeli leadership has normalized killing Palestinian civilians and the military personnel know there will be no repercussions unless it is so bad that they can't cover it up.

They used the normal playbook in this case (blame Palestinian terrorists) and when there was enough evidence to disprove that assertion they just threw up their hands and said "accident" and that was it.

It's a problem when offices have to operate according to Beijing time.
