Are you actually from former Czechoslovakia? Because I've lived there during those years and it wasn't as much student-led, just generally young people-led. Some of them were students, many were not. Of course CIA had its share of working but that is to be expected, literally their primary mission.

The only reason it wasn't ended quickly by army in bloodshed (and army leaders all declared that they stand fully behind government and tanks were ready) was that ruling party politicians at power were not hardcore fanatics and understood it would be often fathers fighting against sons, or childhood friends against each other... civil war. It was allowed to happen from above, however non-romantic this reality is. It was also happening in times when iron curtain was visibly falling apart all around including Soviet union, 5 years before it would be crushed like nothing.

Its fine to have romantic view on the world, but for better understanding of the actual world out there and humans living in it, where we come from and where we go this isn't very helpful.

How do you even want to measure it up. Wide hacks spread the harm across many targets, say land registry in your country gets hacked and all DBs are wiped out. Now there is no official proof you own the house you live in.

How do you even want to calculate costs. Should you be even calculating costs when real damage is also a lot of misery, some heart attacks and 50k people lose 1 year of their life due to massive stress for example.

Imagine the PR when you are the only / one of few vendors who are still up, while rest is in shithole. That has its weight too, in certain situations at least.

It will start working when majority of folks here on HN will stop being so uncritical to apple and consider this very topic in way you suggest, ie by yearly independent public audit of whole trail related to security. Not the most important topic probably but a great litmus paper for crowd thinking.

Far from only such company but the pass apple gets probably the biggest globally, its so emotional and thus I cannot take it seriously.

Still waiting for that glorious day.

It completely depends what you want from system and how efficient it will be. Want social protections dialed to 11 (like even small government bureaucrats getting golden parachutes worth 1-2 years of their salary while being otherwise practically un-fireable, regardless if they are actually needed... in fact most perm folks are extremely hard to let go). Or you want strong economic prosperity. Cannot have both, the best mix is Switzerland but French will die sooner to the last person before they would admit somebody did state and laws things better than them and that they should maybe get inspired a bit.

What french public conveniently fails to grasp and loses 100% of my support is the naive expectation that in struggling economy they should be rich, while having social system actually dialed to 12 since that 11 is never enough for them. And have 0 doubt, all the protesters now and also before are at the end after money. Money will magically appear in government budget and in all salaries, prices of petrol/diesel will be magically ultra low regardless of yet another failed war being waged by US causing massive rise in prices globally. If one doesn't travel around the world and just lives there it may feel like a normal default system, but given reality of the world out there its anything but.

Lets talk like adults what is achievable or not and manage expectations accordingly. Not very french way, is it. Any attempt to reform even a bit is met with extreme violence, blocking of economy and other self-harm behavior that ruins the economy further and solves 0 of underlying issues, so most cave in and problems fester. I predict it will get much worse in France before there is chance to get things better again, and how much depends on their ultra comfy, some would even say spoiled population.

Some of.the biggest ones woild float on water... which tells you its not very useful to compare density based on Schwarzschild radius

Yes but it removes some groups of otherwise-investors, meaning there is less interest in stocks, which pushes them up less, if not down

You get that treated with new car like any other owner in such environment. Or is your whole car rusted through?

What an episode. Are we in a variant of this? Sometimes I feel like humans would deserve it, sometimes there is some light

Seems like you are constructing a very specific situation that should mark some sort of regime change to dictatorship. The reality is, complex things have their own momentum and US society is a big thing.

Btw I've lived in one of those regimes. Yes people often privately expressed their stark opinions against the system, sometimes in more vague forms also publicly. There is infinite amount of gray between those 2 extremes, and US is already somewhere there moving darker a bit each day.

A sad perspective, maybe rooted in good set of experiences, but it reeks of being sour, closed in injured person who is potentially not so mature emotionally. Good relationships take serious effort to create and sustain, approach of 'I don't need any of this' won't get you far with any decent folks. Maybe you overload the term 'friend' a bit.

I hope being wrong for your sake, but I've met such folks, brilliant in 1 very narrow direction but socials are lacking pretty badly.

Just 1 nitpick - women who care about you suddenly once you have some wealth and/or show off you have are not good partners, not even short term. Its obvious common knowledge yet when looking around its surprisingly often ignored.

Parent's claim are as old as human civilization, we are still just a bit better apes and what he wrote is still valid for 100% of the humans. It doesn't mean 100% will admit it, far from it.

Maybe, maybe not. For sure the time and energy spent getting it all, and then realizing you didn't enjoy life as much as you could just to acquire it is the real killer.

Nobody is arguing against just getting more money (well it gets philosophical at least) but how much you lose of your most precious item you have in this world to attain it and if its worth it.

Or to put it in other way, just check by far the biggest regret of many dying people. If you think you can behave the same but somehow avoid ending up in same situation well... good luck I guess, you'll need it.

The only folks demonizing China are clueless US 'patriots' and I can see it only here on HN since nobody in the world really consumes US news. Rest of the world is already seeing it as better option to US in many ways, but warry of not destroying domestic companies by cheap imports.

What I see from outside is complete full reversal of US and China and their roles in the world regarding politics and security. US has nothing to offer to anybody - backstabbing, frequent changes of policies on morning whims of an old sick man, or very direct economical attacks to closest former allies and threats of military attacks. Plus completely destabilizing global oil transport, massively increasing prices and helping trigger a global recession.

Only an absolute fool would think US has anything positive to offer. In such world, China is by far the least of the evil, role traditionally held by US but not anymore.
