So that’s the takeaway? “There is no money for this, so it just is what it is”? That’s insanity. So what now? Hope they don’t get hacked again, because by that logic there is still no money for upgrades and fixes, especially after losing a ton of money on spoiled inventory? But I guess that’s okay, only the “laptop class” actually cares. The supermarket lives in the real world with real challenges, none of that pesky security needed. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here.

You are less likely to double dip as a PC player if it’s available in a timely manner. However right now there is a lot of PC players that will buy the console version just because it’s available and there is no announcement for the PC version. And then buy again in a year or so when the PC version comes out with the ability to crank the graphics settings up.

As a graphics programmer, the most charitable interpretation I have here is that in 2D all the animations are baked into texture atlases. A 3D model would re-use its textures during animation, in 2D it’s a new one.

But I don’t see Factorio as being a VRAM pig, even with all their animations, which you could certainly improve on from the simplistic “every animation frame is a whole new texture” model.

Now if that isn’t a great Zachlike game mechanic. Playing as the patch pipeline builder.

But that’s also a data point and could/will be flagged as suspicious behaviour. Opting out of the norm makes you identifiable just as much.

Not everything has to happen in your or my lifetime. Not everything will happen in our lifetimes. If time is so important, Haiku was never going to work for you anyways on account of it being niche, which adds friction, which adds time. Velocity isn’t going to fix this either

Yeah the title reads quite weird, but I would think “turned up” instead of “turned into”. The domain didn’t cause geopolitical war after all.

I definitely assumed it was a Bloomberg terminal for doom scrollers.

Let’s go with what this is actually about, windmills. I lived next door to a farm with windmills on it and I actually found them mesmerizing and nice to look at. Also a fun talking point with people visiting, but if we all had them in our backyard I suppose that novelty would wear off.

So tl;dr: I would absolutely want to have windmills as my neighbours again. Datacenter not so much, but they are also substantially bigger, though not taller, than windmills.

Isn’t that the same bet that famously profitable companies like Uber did in the ride share market?

This thread was similarly eye opening to me. But it explains why that store is always packed, apparently people just do weekend trips to Costco.

When you get up from a seat and walk a few steps you are already doing that on something that is hurtling down space. We don’t notice that our planet moves a lot, because we can’t really see the movement in our reference frame. If you were on a plane without any windows, no turbulence and no sound cues from the engine, you wouldn’t know when getting up from your plane seat that you are in a moving object either.

Acceleration is a real force that we can feel. But once moving at a constant speed, physics dictates that it’s all the same. That’s also why you can throw a tennis ball up on a plane and not have it fly backwards immediately smacking into the person behind you.

In the reference frame of you and the aircraft, you are not moving at all and neither is the plane. In the reference frame of the ground you and the plane are moving.

Semiconducting materials have relatively small band gaps, they are insulators that take very little additional energy to become conductors. In contrast good insulators incinerate before they start conducting (or turn into plasma).

Energy being energy means that high enough ambient heat can kick electrons into the higher orbitals because the band gap is so small. This also happens at normal ambient temperatures, but those electrons don’t make it very far and there aren’t that many. At 200c a closed gate is not stopping enough electrons from moving through it anymore.

At least this is the slightly hand waved technical explanation. Project in Flight on Youtube has an excellent video on how semiconductors work.

That shouldn’t be a problem then given that we don’t care about environmental impacts anymore.

The fissile elements and the oxygen that makes up water already came from stars.
