At least in North America the issue is federal and even state governments have divorced interests from municipal governments.

They are setting immigration allowances with respect to growth and financial planning.

Municipalities generally over the last 50 years decided they like their neighborhoods how they are, thank you very much.

Local governments needed to be building for this all along. Now we play catch-up.

Though, also, immigrant students are very desirable due to how much they general pay for school (and this subsidize the rest of the budget), and how little any municipal, state, or federal governments had to pay to produce a productive adult taxpayer.

This is an awful take as beanie babies were always predicted to be collectors items but failed to reach that status.

Pokemon cards, on the other hand, are veritable collectors items, like stamps or baseball cards.

Like baseball cards, their value comes from a combination of rarity and nostalgia.

the sportsbooks/prediction markets were just legalized this summer. that's why there was a swell of advertisement.

it seems unlikely they'd ban something so soon after legalizing.

Apple is just as bad as Microsoft in this regard. They just won't leave their users alone.

as the family techie, I recommend tech and that's what sticks with them. Recently, it's Firefox.

I wouldn't be surprised if those people had some techie in their life advising similar! and/or, they just really want decent adblock tech.

I just wish they'd fix what they already have. the nest hubs are a completely fine format. but they're underpowered (the UI lags badly), and they completely destroyed the voice assistant which had LLM-like answering capabilities in 2018. Now it just says "I'm not sure, but here's some results".

if they just rebuilt the same device newer, better, with all of the old capabilities, I'd probably buy one.

you might be surprised to learn that there are people who apply for eb-2 on work (or non-work) visas other than h1b.

you can already get a greencard by paying less than $1mm in taxes. in general, your requirements are way higher than what's even required for citizenship. and green cards don't need a civics test either.

but I agree that it would be nice to have a less fraught/complicated path to permanent residency.

i think the difference here is that humans can't even write down what makes a great game great. we don't know. you have to play it.

if we can't even write it down, how is an llm going to be able to ace it?

i'm guessing it means that when datacenter gets too hot (maybe load, maybe climate, or maybe a combination), they may use more evaporative or other methods to help cool. e.g. a turbo mode for cooling that uses more water, but isn't required at all times.

ground is actually a vector of loss for water.

if you look at household water consumption, most places in north america treat their water and return it to a freshwater source. you can scale cities very wide and water use might go up, but the consumption rate is actually low. more depending on how much people water their lawns.

farms on the other hand 'spray water on the ground' but it actually removes the water from the freshwater source and needs to be replenished.

leaks is water loss/consumption. human activity is no guarantee. leak in this case is still bad.

most bars have scanners that will warn if the same id is scanned twice. it means that someone producing fake ids would at least need a repository of valid barcodes such that two purchasers wouldn't experience the birthday problem trying to get into a bar.
