> Touch-screen Macs is kind of a terrible development for anyone who loves the Mac

Agreed. There has been a long history of the clarity and usability of teams having a single focus. I mean we’re still feeling the negative downstream effects of the “3D touch” last seen on the XS.

For those who are too young to know what I’m talking about: you missed out on a level of elegance and refinement that probably won’t be replicated

You make an interesting point, but I still shudder at the idea of multitasking on a 14” screen with the 40-50 elements I need being finger sized + aesthetic padding

> Literally nothing should be considered truth with Reddit as its only source

Don’t get me wrong: I completely agree that Reddit should not be the only source, and go further that nothing should be assumed to be true based on Reddit signals (such as upvotes and comments). This is why I carefully chose my words: these can be strong signals of truth.

I think it’s also worth parsing out that I don’t think this is valid across all subreddits.

My main thought while reading was “carefully crafting efficient, clean, and effective breakdowns is hard. I really appreciate that time and effort more now than I did before.”

Who bears responsibility when TV makers and data brokers undoubtedly had clear and verifiable evidence passing through their systems?

Sure, ‘knee-jerk’ reddit is unreliable, but many upvotes over time with supporting comments can be a strong signal of truth

Considering the scale, why doesn’t YouTube allow users to suggest edits to the subtitles (with whatever protections and community voting that needs)?

It feels like it’s time for a new subtitle format based on audio fingerprinting.

Imagine the same subtitles working across different encodings and (minor) edits of the same video…

It’s so surprising to me that diarisation and voice recognition are positioned almost entirely outside of the “public good” AI work.

We have voice cloning at a level that would have felt like a miracle a couple years ago, and yet doing the reverse is some sort of hush hush $$$$ work?

My only thought is the people in charge don’t want the public to know the privacy nightmare that they can now be instantly recognized snd transcribed anywhere there’s a mic

Counter argument: it was a wacky choice for Apple to split the app and the “data” (Application Support). Yes multi-user and deduplication are concerns, but I would much rather have everything self-contained. Using that paradigm for Android apps (where dedup is barely a concern) is a relief

I wouldn’t have agreed before I learned software more deeply, now I especially agree in the age of better and better AI.

Put simply there are solutions that are elegant and irreducibly correct. I think we got away from this because software expertise got so fragmented by frameworks and packages but AI can cut through all of that.

This already happens and has been happening for a while, especially in the Apple ecosystem. I can’t even count the number of apps that did something novel, got popular, had that novelty restricted by some update, then got “replaced” by an Apple app/feature as though they never existed.

Counter-intuitively (or intuitively if you’re inside the industry), slow Electron apps became the norm because of how much developers cost. Now that AI can step in with parallel expertise at scale, I suspect we’ll have all sorts of optimization races.

Yes and no: if cheating makes it so non-cheating players can't have a good time, then multiplayer dies out and the perceived value of the game goes down
