Everyone in this thread arguing the legalese of what Aaron did vs what Anthropic did is missing the damn point.

Yes, the exact crimes are not the same.

Aaron was a vulnerable individual and a very easy target for an overzealous prosecutor. Anthropic is a large company with the money and resources to shield any individual working there from meaningful punishment. No one at anthropic is facing jail time for crimes that should carry a sentence. The crimes are similar and involve theft of copyrighted resources. Aaron’s point with JSTOR is that all that research had already been paid for by American taxpayers. JSTOR was just gatekeeping for profit.

The message from Alsup is clear: if you have money, pay the fine and you can keep doing what you like. If you’re a single person without that, you will be caught and maliciously prosecuted.

I think world leaders are acutely aware of what's happening. They just don't care because shit stains like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk keep shoving money in their faces.

Russia has been indiscriminately attacking civilian structures since they started the war.

All I'm seeing is two sides continuing to escalate and respond to each other while the rest of the world watches.

I think IDScan is still responsible for. You don’t typically go after hosting providers for failures like this, right?

Or are you referring to the practice of using shell companies to obfuscate responsibility? In that case, I think there’s history that says IDScan would still be responsible, questionable legal business nonsense be damned.

Sounds like the system is working as intended.

Snark aside, I agree with you, it’s messed up and there is a better a way.

How are you getting around bot detection shutting you out? I tried exactly this but for stop and shop.

Yeah, so would investment in reliable, nice public transportation. I know it doesn’t solve the last-mile-problem.

Either way, fewer drivers means fewer deaths.

a funny codex anecdote:

I had 5.6-Luna coordinate a code review in which it spawns 2 agents looking for different things. My prompt was "review the currently checked out branch. diff target is `next`. The jira ticket is XX-XXXXX..." My `next` branch was a few commits behind `origin/next` but it still did its review against the stale local version instead of clarifying or inferring that I meant `origin/next`. The findings were very confusing until I realized what I did.

I'm noticing the need to be really specific with any instructions lately, which I don't think is a bad thing. I expect co-workers (or anyone really) to tell me what they need in specific terms so I can get it right. I can do the same for the machine, I guess.

It mostly doesn't depending on the harness you're using the skill with. The author turned it into a pi extension, for example, in the `extensions` folder in the repo. Users of pi can enable and disable the skill with a slash command. I saw some other harnesses supported.

If you’re being pedantic, sure.

Edit: to elaborate, it’s bullshit that I need to pretend that Nazis have anything to say that’s worth listening to in the name of “polite political discourse”.

It’s an ideology built on hate and violence toward others.

There are reasonable people who can grasp nuance on both platforms, but you can't deny that twitter/x has become known as a place that allows Nazi politics on it. Just look Elon, the owner..

It's seriously disingenuous to frame the bluesky vs twitter/x as a difference in political opinion.

I didn't know this was a thing until you mentioned it. I'm glad there are more options today. I have since left the company and haven't gotten to work in address-related problems since.

We were pretty invested in using Google at the time for their Geocoding API. The questions that needed answering for our use-case were:

- Does this place actually exist?

- Can it be found on Google Maps?

- Do we (the company/researchers) have an entry for this place already?

I honestly can't remember. I don't think it was an option for our company at the time, or I was too inexperienced to evaluate that as a solution. As fun as it was, I was also flying by the seat of my pants there.
